Hillary Clinton has sent a supportive message to Finland's Prime Minister by sharing a photo of herself dancing during her time as the US Secretary of State.

Sanna Marin, the Finnish Prime Minister, has recently been slammed on social media after a series of videos were leaked showing her dancing and partying with her friends while in office.

The leaked footage included a video of the 36-year-old dancing with male popstar Olavi Uusivirta at a Helsinki nightclub and a picture of two female social media influencers kissing and posing naked at her official residence.

The 74-year-old former First Lady has now rallied behind the young leader by posting a throwback photo - that made headlines 10 years ago - of her tearing up the dance floor and drinking beer.

"As Ann Richards said, 'Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backward and in high heels,'" Clinton wrote, citing a quote by the late former Governor of Texas.

"Here’s me in Cartagena while I was there for a meeting as Secretary of State," she continued by sharing a snap of her on the dance floor in Colombia at the end of the VI Summit of the Americas in 2012.

"Keep dancing, @marinsanna," the former Democratic presidential candidate concluded in her tweet which as of this writing had amassed over 166,700 likes. The Finnish leader herself liked the tweet and responded: "Thank you @HillaryClinton," with a heart emoji.

Clinton's message of support comes more than a week after Marin was forced to clarify in a public press conference that she had taken a drug test in response to the leaked footage of her private gathering.

"I have taken a drug test for my own legal protection, the results of which will come in about a week," Marin had said, adding that she didn’t have any government meetings that weekend. The result of her drug test was negative.

"I had some time off and I spent it with my friends. And I didn’t do anything illegal," The Social Democratic Party leader said while in tears during her emotional speech.

She then went on to defend the critique of her private life to a crowd of her political party’s members in the southern Finnish town of Lahti, saying: "I too am human. And I too sometimes long for joy, light, and fun among these dark clouds."

The mother-of-one also noted to government members that she had never missed a day of work nor "left a single task undone" because of her free time.

Apart from Clinton, she has since received widespread support from women in her country last week, who used social media to post videos of themselves partying.

Hundreds of women have posted videos of themselves dancing with the hashtag #SolidaritywithSanna, and many people suggested that Marin had faced far more scrutiny than her male counterparts like Boris Johnson and Donald Trump.
