An outage that is impacting AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile customers has sparked comparisons to the Netflix thriller Leave The World Behind.
As reported by the Daily Mail, customers have found themselves grappling with widespread network issues spanning across the United States and even reaching into Canada.
AT&T iPhone users bore the brunt of the disruption, finding themselves stuck in SOS mode, restricting calls solely to emergency services, as the glitch rendered regular calls inaccessible.
According to data from DownDetector, the surge in outages hit around 4:00AM Eastern time, causing service disruptions in key metropolitan areas such as New York, Boston, Washington, Montreal, Honolulu, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco.
AT&T users bore the heaviest impact, with reports spiking to a staggering 31,931 at 4:30 a.m. Moreover, over 2,400 service outages were documented for Verizon and T-Mobile on the platform.
The ramifications extended to emergency services as well, with nationwide 911 operators cautioning that the outage had compromised their capacity to field calls.
Despite the widespread calling issues, some users in New Orleans noted that while making calls was impossible, texting services remained functional
While these outages have caused a huge inconvenience across the country, some can't help but note that it is similar to the plot of Leave The World Behind.
The plot revolves around a family's picturesque vacation in a luxurious villa, which turns dark when a cyberattack disrupts their electronic devices, coinciding with the sudden arrival of two mysterious strangers.
As chaos ensues, the movie follows the family's struggle to survive amid a collapsing world.
Without spoiling too much of the plot, there are many twists and turns in which characters portrayed by Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Mahershala Ali and plunged into chaos.
Given that the movie is based on a cyberattack where phones stop working, it's easy to see why comparisons are being made.
One person took to X, saying: "This AT & T outage is very much giving Leave The World Behind vibes."
A second added: "I just watched leave the world behind WTH is this cell service down?"
While a third said: "This cellular network outage is reminding me of leave the world behind & I don’t like it."
One person was the voice of reason, albeit a bit ominously, saying: "It's not just AT&T. It appears all wireless carriers in the US are experiencing an outage simultaneously. It's definitely not a Leave the World Behind situation... yet."
If the movie has taught us anything, it's that we need to immediately stock up on food and water, get out of major cities, and abandon all self-driving cars.
