The judge who was the victim of a dramatic attack by a felon in Las Vegas has ordered that he appear in court "by any and all means necessary".
As previously reported, Clark County district judge Mary Kay Holthus became the victim of a violent attack during a sentencing hearing last week.
The shocking events unfolded on January 3 at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas, when the defendant, Deobra Delone Redden, launched a sudden assault.
Disturbing footage from the courtroom cameras depicts the 30-year-old Redden yelling: "Nah f*** that b***h," before abruptly leaping over a defense table and the judge's bench, ultimately lunging at Holthus. Watch the shocking incident unfold below:
In response to the assault, court and jail officers, along with courtroom staff members, swiftly intervened, wrestling Redden to the floor behind the judge's bench.
Judge Holthus sustained injuries after falling back against a wall. Fortunately, she did not require hospitalization, as stated by court officials. However, an official who came to her aid suffered a gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, necessitating medical attention.
Redden's initial court appearance related to allegations that he assaulted someone with a baseball bat last year. Despite being assessed as mentally competent to stand trial, he pleaded guilty in November to a reduced charge of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm.
Before the violent outburst, Redden had pleaded with Judge Holthus for leniency during his sentencing, describing himself as "a person who never stops trying to do the right thing, no matter how hard it is."
He asserted: "I'm not a rebellious person," emphasizing his lack of involvement with drugs and expressing his belief that imprisonment was not justified. However, when the judge revealed her intention to send him to jail, Redden charged forward.
As reported by 8 News Now, Judge Holthus has ordered that Redden return to court by "any and all means necessary" as he faces 13 charges in connection with the attack.
Following the incident, Redden claimed that he was having a "bad day" and was intending to kill Judge Holthus as he leaped over the bench, per the New York Post.
He described the judge as "evil" but later expressed remorse for his actions.
Following the attack, The Las Vegas district issued a statement reported by Channel 13, saying: "We commend the heroic acts of her staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant.
"The court remains committed to a safe and secure courthouse and courtrooms. We are reviewing all our protocols and will do whatever is necessary to protect the judiciary, the public, and our employees."
In 2021, Redden served time in prison for a domestic battery charge, receiving a 12 to 30-month sentence. However, he was granted parole in 2022 by a board.
