Derek Draper, a former political adviser and beloved husband of TV presenter Kate Garraway, has passed away after enduring several years of severe health complications resulting from COVID-19.

At the age of 56, Derek Draper had become one of the UK's most enduring COVID patients, battling the virus since his contraction in March 2020. His remarkable fight against the illness saw him spending a staggering 13 months in the hospital.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kate Garraway confirmed the heartbreaking news of her "darling husband's" passing. She shared that she had been by his side, holding his hand during his final hours.

"I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications," she wrote.

"Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible. Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support.

"Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."

Draper's battle with COVID-19 had left him with extensive organ damage, necessitating constant care and medical attention. The ordeal took a devastating toll on both him and his family.

Tragically, in early December, reports emerged that Derek had suffered a heart attack, adding another layer of anguish to Garraway's already difficult journey. Her colleagues on ITV's Good Morning Britain extended their heartfelt support to her during this challenging time.

Garraway and Draper tied the knot in 2005. Together, they shared the joys and challenges of life, raising two children. Their enduring love was celebrated in September when they marked their 18th anniversary. Kate expressed her profound gratitude that Derek had survived to witness this milestone in an Instagram post.

However, just a few days later, Garraway unveiled her book, "The Strength Of Love: Embracing An Uncertain Future With Resilience And Optimism," which chronicles the upheaval in her life when her beloved husband fell seriously ill. The book serves as a testament to the unwavering love and resilience that Kate and Derek exhibited throughout their tumultuous journey, inspiring others facing similar trials.

Our thoughts are with Draper's family, friends, and loves ones at this time.
