Inquest reveals new details about man who was mauled to death by tiger
An inquest has revealed new details in the case of William Chapman, the man who died after entering the tiger enclosure at a UK wildlife park.
Chapman, 23, was killed by the tiger after witnesses reported he had climbed into the den at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park last weekend on October 10.
William Chapman’s mental health status was confirmed by an inquest
After his identity was confirmed, Chapman’s family paid tribute to him and revealed he had been struggling for some time with significant mental health challenges.
The first full statement from his family came via the UK breakfast morning news show Good Morning Britain, which revealed their grief at social media circulating his last moments.
"The publication and circulation of deeply offensive media content is causing them severe distress at an exceptionally vulnerable time," the statement reads.
"The family are utterly devastated by their loss and are struggling to come to terms with what has happened. [Chapman's] family are hopeful that the relevant authorities will do their utmost to get to the bottom of why our amazing son did what he did."
They concluded: "William was a bright, warm, and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved - and William loved them back."
Chapman, who was a former child actor, has since been confirmed to have been struggling with schizophrenia prior to entering the tiger pit.
The inquest heard an officer say: "During my communications with Mr Chapman's family they confirmed he had a history of mental illness, a diagnosis of schizophrenia and had suffered previous bouts of psychosis and was under the care of Doncaster Mental Health Services.
"Despite his diagnosis Mr Chapman was highly functioning and independent.
"His family have expressed a number of concerns in relation to his contact with mental health services leading up to his death.”
Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes went on to confirm his movements and how it led to his death.
She said: “He was approached by the tiger and the ensuing physical contact between the tiger and Mr Chapman led to him sustaining multiple traumatic injuries which rapidly led to his death.”
A post mortem provisionally determined the cause of death as being caused by ‘1A multiple traumatic injuries and 1B animal interaction.’
Senior coroner for South Yorkshire East Nicola Mundy said the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust had launched an investigation, and the full inquest would be held on March 18, 2027.
The inquest heard that Chapman was a self-employed online trader before his death.
