Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has opened up about her decision to freeze her eggs, while addressing the speculation that the personal choice could be connected to a possible 2028 presidential campaign.
The 36-year-old New York Democrat revealed that she had begun the process and has been documenting parts of it for her followers on Instagram, including giving updates about the hormone injections required before the eggs can be collected.
Ocasio-Cortez said egg freezing was something she had been considering and saving money for over a period of time.
With Congress currently on its August recess, she said she felt that now was the right moment to undergo the procedure.
“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” she said, adding that she felt “empowered” by the decision.
The congresswoman also appeared to address assumptions that freezing her eggs could be linked to ambitions of becoming president in 2028.
“The media will run up and ask a question like, ‘Are you going to run for this? Or are you going to run for that?’ And it is almost through this very two-dimensional, craven understanding or ambitious understanding of power,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She argued that politicians, like many people, make major decisions based on a range of personal circumstances rather than simply their ambitions for political power.
“I think a lot of us actually approach these considerations or these decisions through the larger context of our lives as whole human beings and what is happening in our lives, as whole human beings,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that being so open about a deeply personal decision could potentially have political consequences.
However, she said she wanted to use her experience to provide information to other women and make conversations about fertility more commonplace.
The congresswoman even planned to continue her treatment while carrying out her political duties.
She said she was scheduled to appear on ABC News' This Week and intended to administer her hormone injections in the programme's waiting room before going on air.
“I want you all to see that. And because women can do anything, and I think it’s badass that I’m going to be giving myself shots in the green room [as I] get my glam on,” she said.
Egg freezing involves stimulating the ovaries with hormones before doctors retrieve unfertilized eggs.
Women typically undergo around two weeks of hormone treatment before the eggs are collected.
The procedure can provide an option for women who want to help maintain some of their fertility while they are younger.
Ocasio-Cortez also spoke about what she sees as a different standard applied to women in US politics compared with men.
“This is just not something that men deal with,” she added.
“Men run for office, or frankly, they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘Okay, this guy is running for office. How old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family,’” she added.
Reflecting on her rapid rise in politics, she recalled being elected to Congress at a relatively young age.
“I got sworn into the House of Representatives when I was 29 years old,” she stated.
“There’s this flip side where you have to then grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately.”

A woman's fertility dramatically falls as she gets older, with WebMD reporting that a 40-year-old woman has just a 5% chance of getting pregnant in any given month.
Now, in a new interview with the Sunday Times, Paris Hilton has revealed that a conversation with Kim Kardashian convinced her to freeze her eggs.

Kim has previously frozen her eggs, and thanks to the procedure, she was able to have three of her four children with husband Kanye West.
"I had a really amazing conversation with Kim about it," Paris told the Sunday Times, adding: "She introduced me to her doctor, and I was so inspired by her to actually do it."

Paris, who is turning 40 next year, said that her decision to have her eggs frozen has helped her to relax about her eventual journey to motherhood.
"I think every woman should do it because you can really control it and not have that, 'Oh my God, I need to get married' (mindset)," Paris shared.
The socialite has been in a relationship with entrepreneur Carter Reum, 39, for over a year, and she said that she is more than ready to take the news step in her life, saying that she would love to have a "mini me".
Posting a picture of herself and Carter back in June, Paris wrote: "You are my greatest adventure. My happiest place. My home is in your arms and the only place I want to be. Paradise is you and me."

"I'm obsessed with dressing them up," she said of her future children, adding that she hopes to one day have twins so that she can have a boy and a girl "at once".
Paris had previously been engaged to actor Chris Zylka, but she ended their engagement in November of 2018 because the relationship just "didn't feel right".
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed that she was a Planned Parenthood baby.
AOC backed the non-profit - which provides vital healthcare and helps millions of people across the U.S. with a multitude of family planning methods - after it's recently been targeted by Republicans attempting to defund it.
The organization offers services such as abortions, contraception, and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
Democratic congresswoman AOC, 31, praised the work of the healthcare provider in response to policies mentioned during a meeting of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Thursday.
Speaking during a House committee hearing titled Birthing While Black: Examining America’s Black Maternal Health Crisis, AOC said:
"First and foremost, I don't want to hear a single person on this committee or outside of this committee talk about valuing life when they continue to uphold the death penalty, when they continue to support policies that disproportionally incarcerate and lead to the deaths of Black men and people throughout this country and uphold an absolutely unjust medical system that exists for profit that allows people to die because they can't afford to live.
“If we want to talk about Planned Parenthood, let’s talk about how many lives Planned Parenthood has saved and how many babies have been born because of the prenatal care provided by Planned Parenthood.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, opened up about her family's involvement with the healthcare provider in the discussion about America’s Black maternal health crisis.
She went on: "If we want to talk about Planned Parenthood, let’s talk about how many lives Planned Parenthood has saved and how many babies have been because of the prenatal care provided by Planned Parenthood.
"If you don't believe it, and if you've never met a Planned Parenthood baby, I’m happy to let you know that I am one and that my mother received and relied on prenatal care from Planned Parenthood when she was pregnant with me."
However, as the Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy noted on Twitter, Planned Parenthood's 2019-2020 annual report shows it provided 354,871 abortion services from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019, and just 8,626 prenatal services during that same time.
Donald Trump Jr. has teased a potential 2024 presidential run.
The son of former POTUS Donald Trump admitted that while he hasn't "personally thought about it" yet, he's not ruling the idea out as a whole.
Speaking to Fox News at a Conservative Political Action Conference gathering in Texas, Don Jr. echoed his dad as he touted unnamed polls "that [have] me pretty high up the list if not at the top of it."
"Who knows," the 43-year-old said.
"The reality with that job is you also have to want to do the day job, right? It's not just about the campaigning," Don Jr. said.
"I love being in that fight. I love fighting for the things that are out there, that I believe in as a conservative. I will do that irrespective. To want to actually get in that mix, is a whole different story."
Last month, President Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, also ruled out a forthcoming Senate run, although she added that she's not saying "no forever."
As for the former POTUS himself, whose business is currently facing criminal charges, an official 2024 presidential run announcement has yet to take place.
Despite there not being an official announcement, Trump last month told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he has made up his mind about whether or not he will run.
Following Trump's tumultuous time in office, which saw a deadly insurrection at the US Capitol and an unprecedented double impeachment, the Republican has dropped a number of hints that he plans to run again once Biden's first term ends.
Hannity said: "You're not going to answer, but I have to ask. Where are you in the process or let me ask you this, without giving the answer... Have you made up your mind [about running in 2024]?"
And without giving anything away, the wealthy businessman-turned-world leader simply responded: "Yes".
Since leaving the White House at the start of the year, Trump has repeatedly teased a comeback in 2024.
"I may even decide to beat them for a third time," he said in a speech in February at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) as he falsely implied that he was the rightful winner of the 2020 US presidential election.
Trump first teased a re-run for president last December - a month after he lost to Biden - telling guests at a White House Christmas party: "We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I'll see you in four years."
Elsewhere in his discussion with Hannity, the controversial ex-president spoke of migrants causing "incalculable" damage to the US, Independent reports.
"You have not hundreds of thousands, but millions of people storming into our country," he added.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed on Monday that she is a survivor of sexual assault, and accused Trump defenders of using "the tactics of abusers."
In an emotional Instagram Live on Monday night, the 31-year-old Democratic congresswoman opened up about how her experience of the Capitol siege last month was impacted by her trauma.
Ocasio-Cortez, who represents the 14th district in New York City, compared those in the GOP who are urging Americans to move past the deadly riot to abusers.
"They're trying to tell us to move on without any accountability, without any truth-telling, or without confronting the extreme damage, loss of life, trauma," the lawmaker said of Trump defenders and certain Republicans.
On the verge of tears, as she relived painful memories to around 100,000 viewers, she went on to say, "The reason I say this, and the reason I'm getting emotional is because they told us to move on, that it's not a big deal, that we should forget what happened, or even telling us to apologize.
"These are the tactics of abusers. I'm a survivor of sexual assault and I haven't told many people that in my life."
"But when we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other," she continued. "Whether you had a negligent parent, or whether you had someone who was verbally abusive to you, whether you are a survivor of abuse, whether you experience any sort of trauma in your life, small to large. These episodes can compound on each other."
When recounting her experience of the January 6 insurrection in the Instagram Live, Ocasio-Cortez explained that she managed to hide with Rep. Katie Porter in her office.
She also recalled how she had locked herself in her office bathroom for a while as she thought the rioters were attempting to breach her office. Fortunately, the individual she had heard was a Capitol officer.
"My story is not the only story, nor is it the central story, it's one of many stories of what these people did in creating this environment," Ocasio-Cortez added. "These folks who are just trying to tell us to move on are just like pulling the page - they're using the same tactics - of every other abuser who tells you to move on."
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she feared she would be sexually assaulted during the Capitol riot in January.
The New York congresswoman opened up about her traumatic experience during the January 6 insurrection, when a mob of pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building.
The horrific ordeal claimed the lives of five people, with hundreds of arrests being made by cops.
Speaking about the deadly day, the 31-year-old politician told reporter Dana Bash, per People: "I didn't think that I was just going to be killed. I thought other things were going to happen to me as well."
When asked by Bash if this meant that she feared being sexually assaulted by protestors, Ocasio-Cortez stated: "Yeah, yeah. I thought I was."
She described how she had barricaded herself in her office for her own safety at the time of the civil insurrection, and that her instincts as a survivor of sexual abuse kicked in.
AOC continued: "Survivors have a very strong set of skills. And the skills that are required as a survivor, the tools that you build for resilience, they come back in right away.
"And for me, I felt like those skills were coming right back so that I could survive."
The politician previously opened up about her experiences during the riots in an Instagram Live video shared with her 8.7 million followers on the platform a week after the harrowing ordeal.
In it, Ocasio-Cortez stated: "You have all of those thoughts where, at the end of your life, and all of these thoughts come rushing to you. And that's what happened to a lot of us on Wednesday.
"I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive."
This comes not long after 34-year-old Garret Miller, of Richardson, Texas, was accused of threatening to "assassinate" Ocasio-Cortez in a tweet made after participating in the riot.
Per The New York Post, court documents show that Miller bragged about his part in the civil disorder online, and also made statements threatening the Capitol Police officer who shot one of the rioters.
He then called for the death of the New York Representative after she demanded Donald Trump's impeachment and stated that all rioters should be arrested.
