Donald Trump has issued a farewell speech yesterday (January 19) as his time as president comes to a close.

The 45th president of the United States, who is the only president in history to have been impeached twice, issued a prerecorded farewell speech in which he stated that his administration has done what it set out to do and more.

"We did what we came here to do - and so much more," he said. "I took on the tough battles, the hardest fights, the most difficult choices - because that's what you elected me to do."

The 74-year-old then warned that "the greatest danger" facing the US is "a loss of confidence in our national greatness".

Trump went on to list a series of his administration's achievements; from "stand[ing] up to China like never before" to "a series of historic peace deals in the Middle East".

He said: "We proudly leave the next administration with the strongest and most robust border security measures ever put into place… with more than 450 miles of [a] powerful new wall."

"I am especially proud to be the first president in decades who has started no new wars," Trump added.

Trump then referred to the January 6 assault on the Capitol, stating: "All Americans were horrified by the assault on the Capitol... It can never be tolerated."

He concluded by acknowledging the transition of power to the new administration, stating "we pray for its success in keeping America safe and prosperous".

Adding: "I want you to know that the movement we started is only just beginning."

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence has taken to Twitter to issue a farewell after his tenure in the White House.

Sharing a series of pictures from his time in office, he wrote: "Thank you for the privilege of serving as your Vice President these past four years, it has been the greatest honor of my life. On behalf of our Wonderful Second Lady, Karen Pence, and our entire Family, Thank You and God Bless America."

Social media users were quick to notice that Pence's farewell message featured no mention of Trump.

Trump and Pence will be succeeded today by Democratic president and vice president-elect, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, respectively.
