A 36-year-old Florida man attacked his sister with a machete while she was asleep in bed next to her one-year-old daughter, according to police in Margate.
Ruben Altidore allegedly hacked at his sister repeatedly in her bedroom on Monday night. At one point during the attack, he reportedly shouted: "Oh my God, why aren't you dead yet?"
The baby was in the bed the entire time.
She was cut badly across most of her body.
A 10-inch wound on the back of her right thigh went down to the bone.
Four fingers on her right hand were nearly severed. Her left index finger and thumb were close to amputation.
A separate cut across her left palm almost took the left thumb as well.
How she got out of the room with those injuries is unclear, but she did eventually make it out.
She made it through the hallway, out of the house, and into the street in Margate, a suburb about 40 miles north of Miami.
Home surveillance cameras in the neighbourhood picked up the sound of her screaming. She ran to a neighbour's front door, covered in blood, asking for help.
"My brother is trying to kill me," she told investigators when they arrived at the scene.
A cousin of the victim was also present and separately confirmed to police that Altidore had attacked his sister with a machete.
The victim was taken to hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.
Luis Pereria lives nearby. He told WPLG that the woman came to his door covered in blood.
"She ran to the middle of the street and then ran to my front door where she was asking for help," he said.
"Apparently she was sleeping when this all happened. I was just baffled by it. How can you do that?"
Her screams were picked up on home surveillance cameras in the area.
A cousin of the victim separately confirmed to police that Altidore attacked her with a machete.
The one-year-old was found still lying in the bed after the attack.
She was covered in her mother's blood but had not been cut or physically harmed.
In short, blood everywhere.
In the bedroom, tracked through the hallway, on a bathroom door, out the front of the house.

Attempted felony murder, aggravated child abuse, and violation of probation.
The probation violation suggests Altidore was already under court supervision at the time of the attack, though the nature of his prior offence has not been disclosed.
He is being held without bond at Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale.
No motive has been released. Investigators have not said whether there was an argument or confrontation before the attack, or whether Altidore had any history of violence towards his sister.

A 19-year-old in New York, who has been arrested for allegedly murdering and decapitating his stepfather, reportedly uttered a chilling remark to his younger sister.
The 45-year-old victim, a New York City sanitation worker, was found dead in a bathtub with multiple stab wounds to his head and neck. His head was reportedly severed from his body, leaving neighbors and loved ones in shock.
Police responded to a 911 call to a Staten Island home just after 4:20PM, arriving to find the victim dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old younger sister of the accused allegedly entered the home after school to find a horrific sight — her brother drenched in blood, urging her to go to her room.
According to the New York Post, the alleged killer reportedly told his sister: "I did something bad, go to your room," as she looked on in horror.
She followed bloodstains through the house, eventually discovering the body of the sanitation worker in the bathroom, with a knife still lodged in his neck. She immediately called 911, reporting the gruesome scene to authorities.
Sources confirmed the teenager, 19 years old, was arrested shortly after the authorities arrived, though no charges had been filed as of the following morning, per NBC New York.
The victim was reportedly nearing retirement after being forced into disability due to severe vision loss.
His close friend Louis Ortiz said he had been helping the victim buy a truck for his girlfriend just days before the murder. Ortiz noted that the victim’s increasing vulnerability made him an easier target for such an attack.
“This didn’t deserve to happen to him. He was just about to retire and live his life as best as he could,” Donna Ortiz, another close friend of the victim, said. “He was easygoing, man. He was a good person. He did anything for anybody. He’d take his shirt off his back and give it to you if you needed it.”
The victim had been in a relationship with the teenage suspect’s mother for nearly six years. While their relationship had its ups and downs, sources said the family had a history of domestic incidents, though it's unclear if the siblings were biologically related.
The alleged killer reportedly struggled with significant mental health issues, including schizophrenia and self-harm.
His issues had been apparent for some time, dating back to 2022, and he had reportedly been through a difficult time in school. His mental health struggles were a point of concern for those who knew him, according to reports.
Louis Ortiz, who witnessed the victim’s struggles and personal growth, called attention to the lack of support for mental health services in the city, per the New York Post.
"The boy was always going through stuff in school. Mental health issues. The city got to do more with mental health,” Louis Ortiz said, echoing the sentiments of his wife, Donna. As a medical worker, Donna Ortiz stressed that the signs of his mental health decline were evident.
“He’d be alive right now if the city dealt with mental health,” she said.
A Texas mother of five desperately fought for her life after she was allegedly ambushed and repeatedly stabbed by two sisters and a friend in broad daylight, according to a close friend who described the horrifying attack.
Caroline "Caro" Peña, 32, was allegedly attacked by sisters Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and Amaya "Cookie" Diaz, 19, along with their 21-year-old friend Kyandra Renee Faz, at around 2PM on Thursday in Del Rio, Texas. The three women have been charged with murder and are being held on a combined $15 million bail.
As Peña was rushed to a local hospital, a chilling photo allegedly taken during the attack appeared on a local Facebook page before later being deleted. The image became the first sign to Peña's longtime friend, Zelina Ochoa, that something terrible had happened.
The now deleted image allegedly showed Peña standing as blood soaked through the back of her pink shirt while the three accused women surrounded her.
"It’s a photo of her standing up and you see the back side of her, and her shirt in the back is completely filled with blood," Ochoa told the New York Post.
Meanwhile, "the three girls are in front of her, they’re surrounding her," Ochoa said.
The stay-at-home mother, whose children range in age from 17 to 3 and include two with special needs, fought back despite having no weapon.
"She had just collapsed and she stood right back up," Ochoa said. "She was a fighter."
"It’s a very powerful picture because it shows, you know, these three girls showed up with their weapons and Caro showed up with nothing but her hands," she added.
"She didn’t show up there thinking that today is my last day."
According to Ochoa, comments from people who said they witnessed the stabbing suggested there was little warning before violence broke out.
"Where this incident occurred, it’s a very busy intersection. It’s on the main street of our town, so there were a lot of passersby," she explained.
Additionally, "This wasn’t something that was done in an alley at 12AM this was done in broad daylight on the busiest intersection at the corner of Sonic."
Based on those witness accounts, "there was really no verbal altercation" before the attack and "it went from 0 to 100 very quickly," Ochoa recalled.
"It confused a lot of people because it happened so quick and everybody was like, ‘Wait, hold on, what did we just witness?’" she added.
Police have not released a motive for the killing.
Ochoa said Peña, whom she met when they were both teen moms, was devoted to her children and avoided conflict.
"Caro was not the type to go to the clubs or be involved in any type of altercation or drama or anything like that, that’s just not who she was," Ochoa said.
"She was that one friend that tried to bring peace among everyone, so it’s just so confusing how this even happened."
"I don’t know if it was just an unlucky day and she happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t know. I really don’t know," she lamented.
Ochoa also questioned why one of the accused women, who she said is also a mother, would allegedly take another children's parent away.
"It’s very unclear as to why a mother would do this to another mother and why she herself wouldn’t consider her own son," she said.
"She’s still gonna see her son grow up through the glass and Caro’s kids are only gonna have a tombstone."
A GoFundMe created to support Peña's children, two of whom are autistic according to the fundraiser, has currently raised more than $5,000.
Remembering her friend, Ochoa said: "She was one of those people that were born to be a mom…she made it look so easy."
"Everyone says your kids love you, but her kids really love her. She wasn’t just their mom, she was their friend…her life was her children."
A CNN reporter has been mugged at knifepoint while reporting on a news broadcast live on-air from Brazil.
The incident took place near the Bandeiras Bridge in São Paulo, where Bruna Macedo and her news crew were reporting on heavy rain causing the water level to rise in the Teté River.

As Macedo spoke with anchor colleague Rafael Colombo in the studio, the suspect can be seen in the footage looking over a bridge.
Two minutes later, the man - believed to be homeless - approached Macedo as she continued her report.
As anchor Colombo continued to ask about flooding in the city, the unidentified man pulls out a knife, causing Macedo to take a couple of steps back. She then calmly responds to the man, as the camera then moved away from the incident and focused on a scene of the street.
The mugger eventually fled when Macedo handed over two cellphones.
Per The Sun, in an interview with Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, Colombo said that his colleague was not injured as a result of the attack and returned to the CNN news center after it took place.
But he said: "She had a terrible scare, but she is fine."
This comes after a fun-runner was faced with backlash after reportedly slapping a reporter's bottom live on-air last December.
Georgia station WSAV-TV was on-site for the Savannah Bridge 10K Run, with reporter Alex Bozarjian addressing the viewers as delighted joggers ran past and gestured at the camera.
But one runner - wearing a hat and sunglasses overstepped the boundaries when he leaned down and smacked the Bozarjian's behind, leaving her visibly shocked and momentarily speechless.

Despite the disturbing turn of events, Bozarjian was able to compose herself and continue with the broadcast.
One stunned viewer who watched the incident tweeted: "We watch @WSAV in our house every single morning. Their staff is like extended family to us. I'm furious about this."
Bozarjian also took to social media to respond to the incident, writing on Twitter: "To the man who smacked my butt on live TV this morning: You violated, objectified, and embarrassed me. No woman should EVER have to put up with this at work or anywhere!! Do better."
The man was later identified as Thomas Callaway, who apologized for his actions in an interview with WSAV. Callaway said:
"Alex, I am sorry. I did not mean to do this. I think you’re a great, great asset to this community and to the local media and to the national media.
"You’re very talented. You’re an amazing woman from what I’ve gathered, and I apologize."
Per Time, Callaway was later arrested and charged with sexual battery.
A young mom who was tragically murdered in Northern California last week has just been identified, KGO-TV reports.
The victim was identified as 27-year-old Door Dash driver, Karina Castro, who was a mother to two daughters aged seven and one.
Per the report, Castro's youngest daughter was fathered by a 33-year-old man named Jose Raphael Solano Landaeta - who also goes by Rafa Solano. It is alleged that he is the perpetrator.
Solano reportedly had a history of violence against Castro, who got a restraining order against him in April this year.
Her father, Marty Castro, told KGO-TV that he regretted he hadn't done more to stop his daughter from seeing Solano, stating: "Every time I saw her, I would beg her. Don't talk to him. Leave him and it seemed like the more I did that, the more she would see him."
It was later revealed Solano doesn't work, and often posts rap songs on YouTube.
Castro's grandmother, Diana Gannon, told the news station that Solano was a diagnosed schizophrenic who was mixing alcohol with his medication. "If there's somebody out there abusing your daughter, don't take off. Don't let it go. Don't take no for an answer. You feel responsible, no matter what anyone says," she said.
Solano allegedly beheaded Castro with a sword in front of a number of witnesses. This was said to have been the culmination of a heated Snapchat exchange between the two parents in the days preceding the murder.
Per KGO-TV, Castro threatened to come forward with allegations about Solano's past, which included the rape of a minor. She also reportedly told him she would expose his alleged sexual relationship with another man.
Solano warned Castro not to "f*** around," to which Castro wrote: "U wanna put a target on my back, ur homies gunna kno the real u."
The verbal confrontation eventually became physical, when the pair met outside Castro's apartment block - that was when Solano allegedly murdered his daughter's mother with a sword.
The aftermath of the violent episode was so traumatic that the deputies who arrived on the scene are undergoing peer support, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office told NBC Bay Area.
"Anytime someone loses their life, it's certainly a tragedy. As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene. We are providing them peer support. We are also providing support for the witnesses that were on scene as well because there were several civilian witnesses," the Office said.
Police were able to apprehend Solano when he returned to the scene of the crime, per the Sheriff's Twitter account. He is currently being treated for a medical emergency.

A teenager from Florida shot and killed his sister on Christmas Eve after an argument over Christmas presents escalated beyond control, police say.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri provided details of the incident during a news conference on Tuesday, as cited by the Independent.
The 14-year-old boy is accused of fatally shooting his 23-year-old sister, Abrielle Baldwin, after they had been out shopping together to get last-minute gifts.
According to Sheriff Gualtieri, the dispute began in a store, with the siblings quarreling about who was receiving more gifts and how money was being spent.
The argument persisted as the family gathered at their grandmother's house in Largo, a city near Tampa, to celebrate Christmas. The purpose of the visit was to allow the grandmother to babysit Baldwin's children while she was at work.
While in the house tensions began to escalate with other family members and the 14-year-old allegedly brandished a semiautomatic handgun, threatening his older brother with a gunshot to the head.
The older sibling attempted to defuse the situation, urging his brother to leave the house. An uncle intervened, separating the brothers and escorting the 14-year-old outside, where Baldwin was with her baby.
Despite pleas from his sister, the 14-year-old reportedly used derogatory language and threatened to shoot her and her baby. Tragically, he shot Baldwin in the chest at approximately 1:45PM local time.
Baldwin's baby, who was in a carrier, remained unharmed.
Following the shooting, the 15-year-old brother emerged from the house with his own semiautomatic handgun. He allegedly shot the younger teen in the stomach before fleeing and discarding the weapon in a nearby yard. Authorities apprehended the wounded 14-year-old at a relative's house.
Baldwin was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The bullet had traversed her left arm, entering her chest and causing damage to both lungs, leading to internal bleeding and respiratory complications.
The 14-year-old underwent surgery and is now in stable condition at a hospital. He faces charges of first-degree murder, child abuse, and being a delinquent in possession of a firearm.
The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office will determine whether he will be charged as an adult.
The 15-year-old brother has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. Both teens have prior arrests related to car burglaries.
Sheriff Gualtieri said: "These young kids - 14, 15 years old - routinely carry firearms, and this is what happens when you got young delinquents that carry guns. They get upset, they don't know how to handle stuff, and they end up shooting each other."
Noting the number of minors carrying firearms, the Sheriff continued: "In the last thirty days, we’ve taken reports where 17 guns have been stolen from unlocked cars. This proliferation of guns on the streets and guns in this area and guns in the hands of these kids is the worst I’ve ever seen. I don’t think we’ve ever seen it this bad. Help us because we have a problem."
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
