A North Carolina mom has died after being mauled to death by two dogs she had agreed to look after for a friend.

As reported by PEOPLE, 46-year-old Trena Peed was dog-sitting two pit bulls at her home on Vance Street in Greensboro, North Carolina.

However, shortly after 2:00AM on Thursday (July 7), Trena's neighbors awoke to screams after she had let the two dogs out in her backyard.

One witness to the attack quickly called 911 for help. In the call, Fox 8 reports that the caller told the operator: "It's dark. All I hear is her yelling and her dogs over there attacking her."

More on this tragic story below:

"All I know is that they... they done drug her into the dark," the caller said.

At the time of the attack, Peed's son was asleep in the house upstairs. When he woke up, he was informed that his mom had passed away.

Greensboro Police have confirmed that one of the pit bulls was shot by a responding officer on the night, with officials telling the press that it was the only option that had to stop the attack, per Newsweek. Guilford County Animal Services now has the surviving pit bull in quarantine.

Peed's daughter, Waynesha, has since started a GoFundMe page in honor of her late mom.

Writing in the fundraiser's description, Waynesha says: "Early this morning, my mom was tragically taken away from us by a vicious attack from a dog.

"My mom has always been a true example of strength, love, and determination. My siblings, grandmother, family, and I are heartbroken at her sudden passing. She has endured and overcame so much, most recently losing two of her sons 2 years apart, both by tragic car accidents."

Peed lost her 14-year-old son, Ja-h Quan Peed, back in 2017 after he was struck by a car while crossing the road. And in 2019, her 17-year-old son, Eric Lee Peed, died in a traffic collision involving a tractor-trailer.

"By her faith, she always had a smile on her face that could light up any room, loved to laugh, cook, enjoy life and had a heart of gold," her daughter added.

Waynesha added that the fundraiser has been set up in the hope of bringing Trena's body back to Virginia and to cover funeral costs.

As of this writing, more than $13,000 has been raised for the family from over 300 donations.

A friend of Peed's also wrote in a Facebook post: "This breaks my heart. This young lady grew up going to church with us and has suffered so much loss in her young life, losing two children to accidents, and now she was attacked by a dog and died."

It is unclear whether or not any charges will be made in the case.

According to DogsBite.org - a group dedicated to reducing the number of serious dog attacks - there has been 22 fatal dog attacks have been recorded across the United States so far this year.
