Perez Hilton’s lawyer has spoken out after his mother filed for temporary custody of his three children, following the blogger’s recent hospitalization.
Hilton, 48, was hospitalized earlier this month after authorities responded to a TikTok livestream during which he appeared to engage in self-harm.
His family subsequently issued several updates about his condition through his website.
Lawyer Natalie Guerra-Valdes said the immediate priority is protecting Hilton’s children and helping them regain a sense of stability.
“My main concern and objective, as well as the family’s, is to protect the children and make sure they are safe,” Guerra-Valdes told Us on Wednesday.
“We want them to have some sense of normalcy as they begin their journey of healing after the tragic events that occurred last week.”
Hilton is father to Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8.
His mother, Teresita Lavandeira, filed for temporary custody on August 7, with court documents stating that Hilton 'voluntarily consented' to the arrangement while he remains hospitalized.
The family had previously thanked supporters for their messages and prayers, while acknowledging how difficult the situation had been.
“Our family wants to once again thank everyone who has reached out with prayers, kind messages, and support for Perez,” they said in an statement.
“Your compassionate humanity during this profoundly heartbreaking time has meant more than words can express.”
They added: “This has been incredibly difficult and emotional for us, made even harder because very little information has been made available to our family.
"While we continue to wait for further updates, we remain hopeful.”
The following day, Hilton’s family revealed that his children, along with his niece and sister, had been inside the home shortly before the livestream incident.
“The events of the past several days have been nearly unbearable for our family,” they said.
“Just minutes before the public livestream incident, Perez’s children, niece, and sister were inside the home.”
The family said they left after realizing Hilton was experiencing 'a severe mental health crisis and harming himself,' adding that they wanted to prevent the children from witnessing further trauma.
His relatives have continued to stress that the children’s wellbeing is their foremost concern while Hilton recovers.
“An important part of [their healing] process is allowing them to safely return home and begin rebuilding a sense of security and normalcy,” the family said.
They also appealed to media outlets and content creators to 'leave the area surrounding the family’s home and not return.'
Hilton has not publicly addressed the incident himself.
In an update last week, his family said he had 'experienced significant blood loss and sustained additional injuries,' which required surgery.
