Tiger Woods' ex Kristin Smith issues emotional response to his 'triggering' DUI arrest
Tiger Woods' ex-wife, Kristin Smith, has shared an emotional statement after his "triggering" DUI arrest.
As previously reported, the 50-year-old golfer was arrested and charged with DUI with property damage, as well as refusal to submit to a lawful test, after he was involved in a rollover crash on March 27.
The incident took place on Jupiter Island, Florida, which is where Woods has lived for years.
Details Of The Crash
According to reports, the father-of-two, who is currently dating Vanessa Trump, tried to overtake a truck and trailer before clipping the vehicle. This caused his SUV to overturn.
"As he was trying to move to the side, the Land Rover overtook him at the last minute, swerved to avoid a collision, but clipped the back end of the trailer," Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensie said at a press conference, cited by PEOPLE.
"The vehicle then listed to the side and rolled onto the driver's door north past the truck that had just avoided the crash," he added.
Woods climbed out of the passenger door of the car after the impact. DUI investigators arrived on the scene shortly after and said that the athlete "did exhibit signs of impairment".
Budensie added that the golfer had been "alone in the car," and was "not sure" if he was wearing a seatbelt at the time.
Woods' Ex Speaks Out
Woods' former partner, Kristin Smith, took to Instagram to share a lengthy statement about the golfer’s "triggering" DUI arrest.
The stylist began by stating that she dislikes "being dragged back into these moments and untrue narratives" now that she has "moved forward" from her past relationship.
"Beyond that, after traumatic unrelated incidents over the last couple of years, I don’t handle being unexpectedly approached or confront[ed] well, and it can be deeply unsettling for me,” she penned.
Smith, who dated Woods in 2016, went on to write that she and her family have been dealing with "anxiety and fear" of "being contacted, watched or followed, in hopes of provoking a reaction about something" that hasn’t involved her in "a very long time".
She then explained that she has "taken the time to process" her personal experience with Woods, and is "grateful for moments that have shaped her," adding: "I hope people will remember that the person they have celebrated and been entertained by is, above all, a human being, and deserving of decency too, just like anyone else."
Smith doubled down on her request for privacy for her family before stating that she has "chosen silence around this situation" before concluding: "That decision wasn’t always easy...Finally, not abandoning myself feels cathartic. Moving on."
Smith and Woods broke up before the golfer's DUI arrest in 2017, which occurred after he was found asleep behind the wheel.
In an August 2017 statement shared on X, Woods confirmed their breakup, stating: "Kristin Smith and I are no longer dating and haven’t since last year," three months after his crash.
Following the May 2017 incident, it was disclosed that he had Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien, and THC in his system.
He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving as part of a plea deal in October 2017.
This wasn't the first time Woods had been involved in a crash under the influence, as back in 2009, he crashed his car while on sleeping pills, and in 2021, he sustained life-threatening injuries in a single-car crash that fractured his legs.
Woods has yet to publicly comment on his recent crash.
