US company is just hours away from landing on Moon for the first time in more than 50 years

Excitement and anticipation are building as the world watches the clock tick down to what could mark a historic milestone in space exploration – the first moon landing by an American spacecraft in more than 50 years.

With hopes high and hearts pounding, the nation awaits the outcome of this pivotal moment, which could pave the way for a future of lunar exploration and discovery.

The potentially historic moment comes a little over a month after the NASA-backed Peregrine One lander failed on its mission and hurtled back to Earth.

Named Odysseus (and affectionately nicknamed "Odie"), the 14-foot-tall lander is the brainchild of Houston-based company Intuitive Machines.

Today, at 5:30PM EST (22:30 GMT), Odysseus is set to make its daring descent near the moon's south pole, marking a significant leap forward in NASA's ambitious Artemis program, Space.com reports.

Since its launch on February 15, Odysseus has embarked on a six-day journey to the Moon, carrying with it a payload of twelve instruments - six of which are NASA's own science and technology marvels. With a price tag of $118 million for the ride to the Moon, the telephone-booth-sized spacecraft has traveled over 620,000 miles, maneuvering flawlessly to position itself for today's historic landing.

"We're very excited, but we're also very nervous," admitted Jack Burns, a professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and principal investigator for one of the NASA instruments aboard Odysseus. "The success has been mixed in going to the surface of the Moon," he told Space.com.

If all goes according to plan, Odysseus will touch down on the rim of the small crater known as Malapert A, approximately 190 miles from the lunar south pole. This achievement would be unprecedented, as no private probe has ever executed a soft landing on the Moon.

The road to this momentous occasion has been paved with challenges, as demonstrated by past attempts from other organizations. However, Odysseus' mission has been meticulously planned and executed, with Malapert A carefully selected as the landing site due to its relatively flat terrain and strategic location.

"Landing near Malapert A will also help mission planners understand how to communicate and send data back to Earth from a location that is low on the lunar horizon," explained NASA in a statement.

As Odysseus prepares for its descent, anticipation is mounting among scientists and enthusiasts alike. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and onboard navigation software, the spacecraft will rely on real-time images to guide its touchdown near the crater.

"It's a new place to land," remarked Burns. "I think Intuitive Machines has done everything it can to prepare."

With the sun already up at Malapert A by the time of arrival, Odysseus faces extreme temperatures, reaching over 212 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. However, with built-in radiators to regulate heat, the spacecraft is poised to brave the lunar environment.
