John Wayne Bobbitt made headlines on June 23, 1993, when his wife, Lorena Gallo, severed his penis while he was asleep.

The act stunned the world and became the subject of a media frenzy.

Lorena later claimed that years of physical and sexual abuse had driven her to commit the violent act, a defense that would become central to her trial, per Daily Mail.

The Moment Bobbitt Realized What Happened

In a 2019 interview with ABC News, Bobbitt recalled the shocking moment he woke up to the realization that his penis had been severed.

"I sprung up and I was bleeding, I was applying pressure, then immediately I thought it was something out of a horror movie. A nightmare… turned into reality," he said.

The violence occurred after a night of drinking and a series of heated arguments between the couple.

Bobbitt’s friend, Robert Johnston, had stayed with the couple while they decided on who would keep their apartment.

Lorena later claimed she was woken by the sound of a door slamming, followed by her husband allegedly raping her.

Bobbitt, who was 26 years old at the time, denied the accusation and alleged Lorena had made sexual advances on him, but he was too exhausted to reciprocate.

Regardless of the differing accounts, Lorena claimed that after the alleged assault, she went to the kitchen for water but returned with a knife.

She was reportedly overcome by the memories of the abuse and her abortion, leading her to say, “I pick up the knife and... I went back to the bedroom. I took the sheets off, and I cut him. Everything went just fast.”

The Aftermath: Bobbitt's Hospitalization and Remarkable Surgery

As Bobbitt realized what had happened, Lorena fled the scene, taking both the knife and Bobbitt’s severed manhood with her.

She later threw the body part out of her car window before calling the police to report the incident.

Meanwhile, Bobbitt was rushed to the hospital by his friend, who got him to the hospital in just 10 minutes.

Upon arrival, doctors initially thought the blood was from an arm wound, but after a closer inspection, they realized the blood was coming from Bobbitt’s groin area.

Dr. James Sehn, Bobbitt's urologist, recalled how the emergency room doctor’s jaw “dropped” when the sheet was removed.

"Really all I knew about this on the way into the hospital was that a penis had been amputated and the organ was missing," Sehn said, per the outlet.

Bobbitt underwent a grueling nine-hour surgery led by Dr. David Berman and Dr. Sehn, who successfully reattached his penis and restored normal function.

Lorena's Trial and Bobbitt's Surprising Response

Lorena was charged with malicious wounding, but during her highly-publicized trial, she was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity and was committed to a mental hospital for five weeks of treatment and evaluation.

Bobbitt was left stunned by the verdict.

“I couldn’t believe it, how could someone get away with it,” he said in the interview.

The couple’s tumultuous marriage came to an end in 1995 with their divorce.

However, the aftermath of the infamous incident took a surprising turn for Bobbitt.

After the divorce, he found work in the adult film industry, a decision that further caught public attention.

Meanwhile, Lorena, after her release from the mental health facility, expressed regret for her actions.

"I never meant to hurt anybody," she said in a 1994 interview with ABC News. "I never hurt anybody before. It just happened."

A man who had his penis cut off by his wife had an interesting change in career after the incident, as he delved into adult films.

John Wayne Bobbitt became a household name in 1993 when his wife, Lorena Gallo, cut off his penis while he slept.

Bobbitt, now 57 and living in Las Vegas, was thrust into the public eye after the June 23, 1993, incident when Lorena used a butcher’s knife to sever his penis, per the Daily Mail.

The sensational case captured worldwide attention, and the term “Bobbitt,” meaning to "cut off a penis," even made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary.

Thanks to quick action by medical professionals, Bobbitt’s penis was successfully reattached during a nine-hour surgery.

Lorena, who claimed years of physical and sexual abuse drove her to the act, was acquitted of malicious wounding by reason of temporary insanity in 1994.

Bobbitt, however, has always denied her allegations. The couple's divorce was finalized the following year.

In an unusual twist, Bobbitt then pursued a brief career in the adult film industry. He starred in a p*rnographic film titled John Wayne Bobbitt: Uncut, which was directed by well-known p*rn actor Ron Jeremy.

Bobbitt and Jeremy reportedly met at a party, sparking the idea for the film.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Bobbitt explained his reasoning behind entering the adult film industry, saying: "A p*rno seemed like the best way to show my penis worked. Only it wasn’t all-the-way healed yet. I realize now that that was the point."

Bobbitt’s career move came under widespread criticism. Before the film’s premiere, Bobbitt was nearly absent due to his conviction in 1994 for misdemeanor battery against his then-girlfriend, Kristina Elliott. He served 60 days in jail for the incident.

The film itself was heavily criticized.

In a 2016 interview with People, Bobbitt explained why he made the films, saying: "The public were curious about whether I still had sexual function."

However, earlier this year, Bobbitt revealed that he had lost more body parts - this time all 10 of his toes - due to complications from toxic peripheral polyneuropathy, a condition linked to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, a military base where he was stationed in the late 1980s.

The condition led to the gradual amputation of his toes over several years, with the final digits being removed in 2023.

Now, Bobbitt uses special prosthetic shoes and suffers from chronic infections and painful skin issues.

He told The Sun that his exposure to the toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune may have also affected his cognitive functioning and mental well-being, which he believes could have played a role in his troubled relationship with Lorena.

"I wasn't behaving the way I should have. Maybe I would have made better decisions if my cognitive functioning wasn't distorted by the chemicals," he said.

The contamination at Camp Lejeune has been described as "one of the worst water contamination cases in U.S. history," involving toxic chemicals being dumped into local storm drains between 1952 and 1987, contaminating the water supply for 35 years.

Bobbitt said: "They knew. They were testing the water and it was up to 3,500 times above normal safety standards."

On June 23rd, 1993, Lorena Bobbitt made headlines around the world after cutting off her husband's penis. She severed the member in the middle of the night, took it with her in her car, and threw it out of the window before calling the police and letting them know what she had done.

Just 24 years old at the time, Bobbitt was put on trial for her actions, but did not serve any jail time. She always claimed that John had been abusive towards her, and her decision to cut off his penis followed an incident that had occurred earlier that night. John had raped her, she said, and she acted out of revenge.

Lorena ended up spending some time in a psychiatric facility, as it was felt that she had been suffering a lot of mental distress at the time of the attack. John, meanwhile, was acquitted of any rape charges, and always insisted that the sexual relationship he had with his wife was entirely consensual. In the years following, he also went on to star in several pornographic films with his famously reattached penis, and managed to make a name for himself from the incident.

Now, 26 years after that fateful night, Lorena says she has absolutely no regrets.

Speaking to the New York Times, Bobbitt recalls what life was like for her in the first few months and years following the trial.

"When I finished with the trial, in the beginning, geez, I couldn’t even go to the grocery store because people would say, ‘Oh my god, You know what, I know you.’ I just wanted to put my groceries down and go home," she said. "I just wanted to take care of myself and my family. You know, just to integrate myself into normalcy and a normal life."

At the time, it was not widely publicised that Lorena's husband had allegedly been abusive. Indeed, most people who heard about the case thought that she had acted out of sheer insanity. It has only been in recent years that people have taken a second look at what happened, and reconsidered the circumstances that Lorena was under.

As a result, she was viewed negatively by the media for years.

When asked by Amy Chozick of the NY Times whether she regretted what happened, Bobbitt responded: "How can you regret something you didn’t mean to do?" She continued: "To me, regret is ‘Oh, I bought a black car instead of a red car’ when you don’t choose right. I wasn’t in my conscious mind."

Chozick then went on to explain that she didn't mean the attack itself, but the aftermath. After all, John Wayne Bobbitt went on to achieve fame and a positive reputation - meanwhile, she was left as the villain. Still, she gave the same analogy of the black and the red car, saying she could not regret something she couldn't truly control.

Over the past two decades, Bobbitt has managed to overcome a lot of the negative responses she gets from what happened.

"I was the subject of so many jokes in the ’90s and to me it was just cruel," she said. "They didn’t understand. Why would they laugh about my suffering?"

Now, she views it differently. "I’ll put myself through the jokes and everything as long as I can shine a light on domestic violence and sexual assault and marital rape," she explained.

Yes, Lorena Bobbitt may go down in history as the woman who cut off her husband's penis, but, especially now that conversations around domestic violence and abuse are changing, she doesn't pay it any mind. What happened, happened - she's just grateful she's out of the worst of it.

A Ukranian woman chopped off her husband's penis and beheaded him after years of purported domestic abuse.

Identified only as Maria, she tried to cover up her tracks by feeding her husband's penis to dogs in their hometown of Obariv.

The MailOnline reported that the 48-year-old decided to put an end to her suffering on the night of August 23 when her husband Oleksandr, 49, returned from work. She did so by strangling him as he slept.

Once Oleksandr was dead, Maria beheaded him with an ax before removing his penis with a kitchen knife.

Police said that she was "constantly suffering physical and emotional abuse and did not see another option to end her misery."

After unsuccessfully attempting to chop up the remainder of her husband's body, Maria ran from her house, covered in blood, and was spotted by a neighbor, Nadezhda Opanasiuk.

In an interview with local media, Opanasiuk said: "Her hands, feet, and clothes were [covered] in blood. She said, 'I am in trouble. I've killed my husband'.

"I did not believe her. I thought they had a quarrel and she might have hit him. I went to see if he needed medical help. When I walked into the room, I saw his mutilated body. The bedsheets were soaked with blood.

I asked her, 'Where's his head?', and she replied, 'There, in the sack'."

Although understandably shocked by what had happened, Opanasiuk was able to alert authorities, and Maria confessed to her husband's murder at the scene.

Police spokesman Vadim Artiukhovich said: "The suspect confessed in full at the scene. She was charged with murder and taken into custody.

"The woman said that she was constantly suffering physical and emotional abuse and did not see any other option to end her misery.

Neighbours say they, in fact, saw the husband beating her up and chasing her with an ax a lot of times.

However, the woman has never reported the incidents."

A mother in India has reportedly cut off her boyfriend's "private parts" - and she says she has no regrets.

The 36-year-old woman claims he tried to rape her 14-year-old child - but that she caught him "red-handed".

According to a report by The Times of India, the woman had lived with her boyfriend for two years after separating from her alcoholic husband.

She had been out working on a farm all day when she claims she came home to find her boyfriend attacking her teenage daughter.

"I was working in the farm when the incident took place. Fortunately, I returned home in the nick of time and caught him red-handed," the unnamed woman told the outlet.

She continued: "He even attacked me while I was trying to save my daughter, so I brought a knife from the kitchen and chopped off his private parts to teach him a lesson."

The woman added that she had no qualms over her actions, saying: "I have no regrets for what I did."

Police in the Mahewaganj region of Uttar Pradesh – an area east of New Delhi - were called to the scene, where they arrested the 32-year-old man on rape charges.

"The 32-year-old accused has been booked under section 376 (rape) of IPC and the Pocso act," said a spokesperson from the Lakhimpur police station. They added that the man was immediately sent for medical treatment as a result of his injuries.

"Since his condition was critical, he was referred to Lucknow for higher treatment," they said.

It has not yet been confirmed whether or not the mother will face charges for mutilating her lover. However, per a report by Fox News, the act of cutting a partner's genitals or "bobbitising" (named after the infamous 1993 incident where John Wayne Bobbitt was separated from his manhood by his then-wife Lorena as he slept) has some precedent in India, where other women have gone to similar lengths when under threat.

In 2018, a 47-year-old woman in Mumbai reportedly cut off the penis of a man who was allegedly stalking her. Police arrested both the woman and her two accomplices, who helped her lure him into an isolated spot, where he was attacked.
