On Sunday night, Ōhope Beach, located on the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand, was struck by a severe storm. At the height of the stormy weather, a tornado rocked through the area, according to the Whakatāne District Council. Six properties had minor-to-moderate damage, two buildings received significant damage, and The Surf and Sand Holiday Park conference centre sustained major structural damage.

"You fight for the lions and they come and fight for you," Ōhope Beach Top 10 Holiday Park manager Mark Inman regarding the community support they received in the wake of the tornado. At the time of the tornado, Inman was picking up his son. He received a video from his wife which showed the tornado up close.

"I rushed back and when I got there it was bedlam," he told the New Zealand Herald. The video his wife took of the tornado shows it slowly approach their family, and she cut it pretty fine when it came to ending the footage.

With a timber being thrown by the high winds straight towards the camera, it was a miracle that nobody was harmed. You can watch the dramatic footage below:

"The Ōhope community has been incredible," Mark continued. "On Monday night we put up a post on social media asking anyone who wanted to lend a hand, to come to the holiday park in the morning. We must have had about 50 people turn up and go door-to-door of the damaged properties and got things sorted."

The Surf & Sand venue, which posted the video to their Facebook page, detailed that no one was harmed, and reported that they are currently helping to coordinate cleanup of the area.
