As the old nursery rhyme goes, if you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise - and this proved itself to be especially true for this family, who ended up having a picnic with a wild bear.

The incident took place on August 6 when Kaitlyn Nesbit, 29, and her family sat down to enjoy a picnic, when they were unexpectedly joined by a black bear at their woodland retreat.

The bear was not only totally unphased by the people at the table, but it happily ate one of their peanut butter sandwiches from their hands.

Footage of the unbelievable incident was posted to TikTok by Nesbit, where it understandably received a lot of attention.

Watch the footage below:

At one point in the video above, a member of the picnicking group gestures for the bear to join them at the table and it obliges. She then offers the bear a sandwich and it happily accepts.

Hilariously, however, a member of the group does remove their beers... clearly, that was the one aspect of their picnic that they weren't willing to share.

As the incident takes place, an onlooker can be heard in the background saying: "This is a f***ing joke, right?"

But according to Nesbit, she had heard about the friendly bear making appearances in the area before.

Nesbit said she knew this because the cabin belongs to a friend and she told members of her group when the bear appeared not to make any sudden movements that might startle the animal.

However, while the bear appears to have been unphased by the incident in the footage, the group was slammed by social media users for the way they interacted with it.

In fact, in Maryland, where the incident took place, it's actually illegal to feed bears. This is because it comes with the risk of them associating people with food and becoming a nuisance.

The official advice from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources reads: "DON'T FEED IT! Scare it away. Make loud noises, bang pans, or yell. Seeing bears can be very enjoyable.

"However, having a bear in camp can lead to problems that will persist long after you have gone home. If a problem becomes serious, your safety and the bear's safety may become jeopardized."
