Sharks are one of the most formidable predators on the planet, a reputation that has undoubtedly been built up by movies like the classic thriller Jaws.
They are powerful, have seemingly endless numbers of razor-sharp teeth, and if turns out that they can jump surprisingly far out of the ocean too.
The latter was recently captured on film when a shark was captured jumping a whopping 15 feet (4.5 meters) in the air - so high that it could very well have been flying.
The shark in the video above is a great white, and according to Sharks World, the animals typically jump up to 8-10 feet (2.4–3 meters) above water, making this a historic breach.
Watch the historical jump below:The footage was filmed as part of the Discovery Channel's Shark Week, and which saw Chris Fallows, a great white shark expert, travel to Seal Island, a small island in South Africa's False Bay.
This footage was captured specifically for the show Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach, which saw a number of experts compete to take the best picture of a shark breaching the water.
However, it was Fallows, in particular, who got very lucky while filming the show and found the record-breaking shark for the show.
Fallows and his team managed to capture the footage by scouring the area with bait attached to the boat in the hope of inspiring an impressive breach.
Then, after a few tries, they got exactly what they were looking for when they filmed the shark jumping out of the water on its newly-found meaty treat.
Fallows exclaimed "Whoa! That was unbelievable, do you see that shark!?" when it jumped out of the water.
It is believed that this was the highest ever breach recorded on Air Jaws.
Sharks breach when they are hunting so that they can stagger and catch fast-moving prey, and according to Bored Panda, they can swim as fast as 64 kilometers per hour when they are near the water's surface.
