A man who died in a great white shark attack selflessly warned his friends that the deadly predator was near.

On Tuesday, the 59-year-old surfer was fatally bitten on his upper right thigh while out on the waves at New South Wales' Tuncurry Beach near Forster, per the Daily Mail.

According to authorities, the man - who was with friends on a surfing vacation - was trying to inform them of the exact whereabouts of the 14-foot creature when it bit into his leg.

The publication reports that superintendent Christopher Schilt said: "It's believed that when the attack occurred the man did actually see the shark and called out to try to warn others and very heroically his friends were able to bring him back into shore after he had been attacked."

Following the attack, the man - who has not been identified in media reports - was pulled from the water before paramedics performed CPR at the scene.

The victim was then taken to a nearby dog park so that he could be airlifted to John Hunter Hospital. However, he sadly died at 12:40PM local time before he could be taken to hospital.

Per the Daily Mail, locals in the area said the killer shark was likely a great white that they know as "Bruce".

The outlet reports that the area is known for its sizable population of great white sharks. And apparently, 64 of them were caught off Foster and Tuncurry during a period of six months.

Officials are currently working alongside the Department of Primary Industries to identify the exact species of the shark, which was the first to fatally attack a person this year.

Per ABC News, a local surf lifesaver Brian Wilcox said there are drones circling the area to try and locate the shark.

Wilcox told the publication: "I can't recall ever having a shark attack in this area. The process for Surf Life Saving now is to keep the beaches closed for 24 hours. We've already had a drone up in the air to see if we could spot some sharks in the area.

"There were a couple of sharks spotted, whether they were the one or not, who knows."
