An explosive argument broke out between strangers after a woman opened a car door to help a dog who was purportedly "gasping for air and dying of thirst".
Footage of the dramatic encounter has since been posted on Facebook by Joshua Candelaria, one of the two people who spotted the dog in the car on what he described as a hot day.
Candelaria claimed in the post that the woman who eventually opened the car door to free the canine, his friend Jennifer Williams-Frangie, had been watching the vehicle for about 20 minutes.
He wrote: "Never a dull moment in Greenfield. Just out for groceries and notice a dog locked in his car on a hot day like today. As we look around for the owner we see no one."
Check out footage of the heated exchange below (Warning - the video does contain strong language and racial slurs):Candelaria continued: "[Williams-Frangie] opened a door and gave the dog water as he was gasping for air and dying of thirst."
Allegedly 40 minutes after the dog was found alone in the car, a family of four returned to their vehicle - and the mother was especially irate to discover that a pair of strangers had opened her car without her permission.
Candelaria wrote: "We waited for a total of 42 minutes for the owner. Out she comes with her two children and husband to act a fool. Mind you as you watch the video she is doing this in front of her kids."
In the video, which was filmed in Greenfield, Massachusetts, the mom can be seen angrily confronting a female stranger.
"You touched my dog and my car. Do you own my vehicle?" the mom screams, with Williams-Frangie responding by asking: "Do you want me to call the cops?" The mom then suggests she might do the same.
Williams-Frangie then reveals that she already has called the cops while the mom continues to raise her voice.
In the comments, Williams-Frangie expanded further on the situation, writing: "[In] the 5 minutes previous to the video starting she was right in my face the whole time but all I was looking at was the little girl in the backseat watching."
Comments were also divided over who was in the wrong:
Many supported Williams-Frangie's actions to help the dog, whereas others argued that they should have minded their own business.
