Family's BBQ is gatecrashed by dozens of giant crabs in nightmare-inducing scene

An Australian family has had their barbecue ambushed by a crowd of giant crabs at a campsite on Christmas Island.

While enjoying an evening barbecue at their campsite, Amy Luetich and her family barely batted an eyelid after their get-together was crashed by dozens upon dozens of uninvited (and clawed) guests.

The giant crustaceans were most-likely drawn to the campsite after smelling the food that was being cooked up by the group. But rather than run away screaming like the rest of us would, the Australian clan simply smiled for photos and let the curious crabs survey the area.

The crabs in question are robber crabs - also known as coconut crabs - and according to Parks Australia, they are the world's biggest land crustacean - growing up to 4kg and measuring up to one meter wide.

Robber crabs can also live up to 50 years and are known for walking away with anything they find on the round that takes their fancy.

Luetich later shared her photos with the Christmas Island Tourism group.

Alongside the nightmare-inducing pictures, the tourism board wrote: "Robber crabs behaving badly!

"A couple of local #christmasisland families had a few extra mouths to feed at their BBQ over the weekend. #coconutcrabs have an incredible sense of smell and for slow moving creatures they sure move quickly when there’s food around... would you like to share your picnic with these guys???

"If you live in Western Australia you can now visit Christmas Island and meet our wildlife for yourself...

"Please note that Robber Crabs are protected (and respected) here on Christmas Island."

Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 1500 km (930 miles) west of the Australian mainland.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Australia, Luetich said that she has never seen so many of the creatures at one time before.

"We have camped in that area a few times and we have never seen so many robber crabs," she said. "As soon as we started cooking, they swarmed around us. My son counted 52 of them."

She added, "Then they started to climb up to the table, and another climbed onto the barbecue. We kept our tents away from where we had eaten, but one of the families said the whole night they could feel one tapping on the outside of their tent."
