A woman has sparked an outcry online after she recalled forcing her husband to ditch his cat in favor of her dog.
Taking to Reddit's Am I The A**hole forum, the woman, who goes by the username 'Both_Refrigerator239' on the site, said that when she and her husband moved in together about a year ago, his cat and her dog had a very strained relationship - which she blamed on the feline.
In order to "resolve" the issue, she asked her husband to get rid of the cat.
She wrote: "Me and my husband have been living together for 1 year. When we moved in together, I brought my 3 year old American Bully, while he brought his 18 year old cat.
"We tried to introduce them to one another by initially separating them, then by introducing them to each other’s smells, followed by letting them see each other whilst at a safe distance. They appeared to get along, but after a day, the cat began making its dislike for the dog VERY clear."
When it became evident that the two animals weren't going to get along, u/Both_Refrigerator239 and her husband tried to keep them separate. The spouses also stepped in whenever their respective animals fought, to no avail.
Eventually, they took the cat to the vet to determine whether it had any issues, however, the vet said the animal was "perfectly healthy".
When she fell pregnant, the Redditor began to worry even more.
She said: "While I’m not saying that the cat would definitely be nasty towards my baby, the way it has acted towards my dog has caused me to worry."
Family members refused to take the "troublesome" cat off their hands, supposedly leaving them with no choice but to take it to a "cat sanctuary, where it would hopefully be able to find a new home, in a relaxing environment and without fear of being euthanized."
She said she and her husband "argued virtually nonstop about this for days, until my husband finally agreed to take his cat to said cat sanctuary. However, he is still pretty upset with me."
The woman added: "I feel really bad for my husband, however, I do feel like it was the right decision, not only for the dog, but our future baby."
Reddit users were appalled by the story, with many sharing their despair for the cat.
One said: "It's an 18 year old cat. Not only is it incredibly unlikely to find a new home, but think about how stressful that would be for the poor thing. Please go back and save his cat. I'd honestly never forgive you if I was in his shoes."
Another agreed: "I honestly would have left the marriage over this. Not even sorry. She should know how much that cat means to him. With her selfish self."
A third commented: "Anyone so heartless that they think that a cat with probably less than a year to live should be rehomed, isn't somebody that should be trusted with love."

A man has taken to social media to reveal that he swapped his wife's old cat for a more well-behaved one after it kept scratching him.
Taking to Reddit's 'TrueOffMyChest' section - where users can anonymously share stories with other Redditors about issues in their life - the husband titled his post: "Six years ago I switched my wife's cat with a more well-behaved lookalike."
Writing under the handle 'throwawaycatswap', the husband explains that his then-girlfriend's cat was "extremely aggressive."
He added: "It scratched everyone, hissed at everyone, and didn't use its litterbox half the time. My wife insisted she could get it to behave better. One week she went out of town to visit her family and I was supposed to go to her apartment and feed it."
Despite his now-wife insisting that the cat's behavior would improve, things came to a head when she went out of town to visit her family for a week.
"I was supposed to go to her apartment and feed it," he writes. "The first night I went over, it scratched the s**t out of my arm. I joked to the cat that it's not special and I'll replace it if it scratches again. The joke stuck with me until I had thought about it enough that it wasn't a joke."
The following morning, the husband says he went to the local animal shelter and found an "identical cat who was already litterbox trained and acclimated to people".
Despite being "a little skiddish", he says "it was a lot friendlier and better behaved, and the skiddishness would help it resemble the original cat".
So - you guessed it - he says he adopted it. After taking it to his wife's apartment and getting the new cat settled, he then "drove her original cat to an animal shelter a town over".
'Why a town over?' I hear you ask. Well, he was "paranoid" his wife would find out if he dropped it at a local one.
In an update to the post, he had clarified that the shelter was a no-kill shelter.
"It's been 6 years since then," the husband writes. "We got married 4 years ago. We still have the swapped cat. It answers to the original cat's name. My wife knows nothing. She loves this cat and brags about how much better behaved it is. Every time I see it, I feel like a total piece of s**t."
The post has since amassed over 69,000 'upvotes' on the platform and received more than 7,000 comments from other users.
There were several comments regarding the legitimacy of the man's story, but for those willing to believe it was true, they responded with comments that were both serious and hilarious.
"If this is real, under no circumstances should you EVER tell her. You will completely destroy her trust," one person commented.
A second added: "How do y’all lie to your spouse so easily? I can’t keep anything in for more than a couple minutes without cracking. Feels so fundamentally wrong."
A third joked: "Best of luck if y'all have kids. Finding a look-alike child is WAY harder."
And a fourth asked: "What episode of Seinfeld is this?"
Regardless of whether or not this man's story is true - and this should go without saying - but please don't swap your partner's pets with more well-behaved identical ones without their knowledge.

A woman has left social media users divided after asking if she was in the right to re-home her pet dog without telling her boyfriend.
Sharing her story to the Am I The A**hole forum on Reddit, the unnamed 26-year-old (who uses the handle zennizenni - titled her post: "AITA for 'giving away' the family dog without my boyfriend's consent?"
Explaining her situation, the unknown woman writes that her 35-year-old boyfriend of five years shares two children - aged six and eight - from a previous marriage, and the couple also have one-year-old twins of their own.
"The year I started dating my boyfriend I adopted a dog," the woman writes. "I was still living at home with my parents at the time and only moved out of there to live with him."
She adds: "My boyfriend lost his job in April and since I have a college degree we both agreed it would be financially more efficient for me to get a job and for him to be a SAHD [stay at home dad]."
However, despite the fact she was able to find a job "pretty quickly", the woman says her boyfriend has struggled to adjust to life as a "stay at home dad". She adds:
"I mean he did absolute bare-minimum to take care of anything. The workload is about 90% me and 10% him. When his kids are here he makes them watch the twins while he plays video games. I still clean, cook, grocery shop, and then have to do a whole bunch of damage control with the kids."
However, the woman then explains that her dog - named Daisy - was abused prior to being adopted.
"Her was really difficult. She has a very strict regimen she needs to follow or else she goes nuts," she writes.
"My boyfriend never follows it and it has resulted in our couch getting chewed up and having to buy a new one, her getting into a ton of her own food and eating out of the garbage and subsequently getting sick, poop all over the house, peeing on every surface, etc."
After months of this, the woman says that he gave her boyfriend an ultimatum: "Start paying more attention or we get rid of the dog."
However, the boyfriend was unimpressed with the choice, and the redditor writes: "He was so mad at me and told me the dog is the only bright part of his day (he does love the dog) so I told him that he needs to either follow what the daily routine, or the dog is going to live with my parents."
The woman then explains that a month ago, one of their twins was playing with Daisy and the dog bit the child's hand. The woman explains: "I don't blame Daisy at all, but I do blame my boyfriend.
"I told him it was the last straw and the dog was going back to my parents. He threw a MAJOR fit, said the bite wasn't even that bad (my kid had to get STITCHES) and that I was over-reacting."
As a result, the woman says she "packed up the dog and the kids, and drove 1 hour away to [her] parents".
She writes: "[Daisy] already seemed more calm and so happy. My parents literally created her routine so they know it well and I know that she will be happier there. We also visit at least once a month, so she will continue to see us."
However, when she arrived home, her boyfriend had left a note saying he's "staying at a friends house for the entire weekend"
"He said that I sent him into a depression and that now the dog will also be depressed," she writes.
In response to the story, many redditors were on the side of the girlfriend, with one person writing:
"NTA. When animals are becoming more aggressive with small children, it's better to rehome them to someone who can take care of their needs. There's nothing wrong with admitting that neither of you can handle Daisy's needs at this point in time."
Another redditor said: "NTA you have an extra child on your hands. The whole situation sounds horrid for you, Daisy, and the kids.
"I'm glad Daisy gets to live with your parents, she knows them and she'll be comfortable with them while still getting to see you guys sometimes, I presume."
Other Reddit users said she should have gotten rid of the boyfriend:
However, not everybody agreed with the girlfriend's decision.
"YTA [You're the a**hole]. That poor dog. Really just represents how much of a heartless person you are. You never considered that dog as part of your family. If you did then I'd be so concerned for the humans in your life."

A man has taken to social media to ask for relationship advice after claiming his vegan girlfriend has requested him to get rid of his pet cat.
Taking to Reddit, the 22-year-old man - writing under the handle throwRA78wdhsg - told fellow social media users that he has been dating his 21-year-old girlfriend for seven months.
He claims that his girlfriend is "amazing" and that they're "super compatible in a lot of ways".
During their relationship, he has also adopted a plant-based diet.
"My GF was proud of me for going cruelty-free and everything seemed well. We became 'the vegan couple' on our college campus," he writes.
And after growing closer throughout the pandemic, the couple is now contemplating living together. But there's one furry thing standing in their way - the Redditor's cat, Mittens.
"After a lot of talking and planning, my GF sat me down and dropped a bombshell on me," he writes, adding: "She said that with this next phase of the relationship, she did not see a future with me unless I was willing to give away Mittens. She said that she believed owning a cat is unconscionable for vegans, because they hunt mice and eat meat, and because the very act of owning a pet is a violation of vegan principles."
The "stunned" boyfriend says that he attempted to justify Mittens' place in their home by explaining that he only buys the feline cat food from reputable brands, to which his girlfriend replied: "How much flesh does your cat eat? How many animals died to make all that food? Would you be okay with that being human flesh?"
He adds: "I would have really appreciated her telling me about her cat opinions before we got serious."
After storming out, his girlfriend later sent him a link to a webpage advocating the extinction of domestic cats - leading to the boyfriend turning to social media for help.
"I think it goes without saying that I am not going to get rid of my cat," the boyfriend confirms, adding: "However, it pains me to think that an otherwise wonderful relationship could be ending because of a difference in ideology.
"I don't even really understand where my GF is coming from because like I said, a lot of vegans own cats. Now granted, cat ownership can be a controversial topic in vegan circles and I probably would not have gotten a cat if I had been vegan at the time, but I have Mittens now, and she deserves to eat."
After explaining that he is cautious against vegan cat food, the boyfriend ends his post by asking: "Where do I even go from here? I will not compromise on Mittens and I don't think my GF will compromise either."
One cautious commenter told the original poster: "Dude this is not a good relationship? 7 months together and you completely adapted to her vegan lifestyle? Already starting to talk about moving in together and her wanting you to get rid of your cat? Sounds like a super controlling relationship."
Another added: "Coming from a vegan: Dump her. No one who ACTUALLY gives a damn about animal welfare would render a pet homeless for NO REASON. Further, anyone who actually gives a damn about animal welfare understands that DIFFERENT ANIMALS HAVE DIFFERENT DIETARY NEEDS."
And a third wrote: "You are young and sound like a nice guy. You can always find another girl. You will never find another Mittens. The former's demands are cruel, controlling and way out of bounds."
What do you think the boyfriend should do? Let us know in the comments section.

A woman was urged to leave her boyfriend after she shared footage on TikTok of him playing with her dog.
The woman - who goes by the TikTok handle @bricksmom - decided to upload what she thought was a cheeky video of her boyfriend playing with her pet dog, who was waiting in the background for its rope chew toy.
The woman's boyfriend, however, threw the toy on one of the deck chairs on the couple's patio, before calling the pet pooch a "d**k."
The text overlay on the short clip read: "Saw my bf was out playing with my dog today so I checked the cameras to see how it went..."
Check out the post below:So far, the video has received close to 280,000 likes and thousands more comments.
Now, any dog owner out there will probably happily admit that they see their pooch as a member of the family... meaning it's only expected that the dog gets called a "d**k" from time to time. (Honestly, I've done it._
Although, after amassing more than 4 million views, not every TikToker saw the funny side of the video. In fact, many users took to the comments section to urge the woman to dump her man, who some people accused of mistreating the dog.
"Ha, no, if he ain't treat my dogs like his babies THEN HE GOTTA GO," one person wrote.
Another added that the woman's boyfriend was exhibiting some major red flags, writing: "Tell us about the time ur boyfriend showed you a red flag?"
"girl RUN [red flag emojis] see the warning signs. Dogs always know first bb. just saying protect yourself my love [sic]," someone else chimed in.
"Dump him. can only imagine what else he has done or said to your poor dog," another comment read.
Other users, however, appeared to stick up for the dog dad, speculating that maybe the dog had wanted to play fetch but then hadn't run for the toy when it was thrown.
"[I'm] pretty sure he wanted to play with the dog but the dog wouldnt come for the toy. and its a joke yall mad for what? [sic]," one user wrote in defense.
Soon after the original clip went viral, @bricksmom uploaded another video showing a "Part 2." That clip shows footage from the same day of the pair playfully engaging with the sweet pooch, with the text overlay on the video reading: "For everyone saying I should leave my bf for calling my dog a d**k."
You see, they're the best of friends really!
And, as any dog owner can probably attest to - sometimes our four-legged friends can be total d***s.

A woman has gone viral on the internet after admitting what she did to get back at her neighbor's son for what he did to her pet cat.
The woman - who was identified as Shannon Cooper - revealed that she threw water all over her neighbor's young son after he poured a cup of water over her cat.
When she revealed what she'd done on Twitter, she ended up sparking fierce debate over which party was in the wrong.
She wrote: "My 10-year-old neighbor just threw a cup of water over my cat who was sitting on the fence minding his own business n laughed so I threw a basin of water over him from the window and now his dad is at my door going mental but I don't see the problem, don't touch my cat."
"Be careful because you could be charged with assault. It will not matter to a judge what the kid did to your cat. All that matters is that you assaulted a child with water. I’m just saying because not everyone will laugh," one person wrote.
"Its v childish how you handled it you should had told the parents first so that they could punish their own kid... Like no that wouldn't hurt a kid but at the same time as a parent myself ID LIKE TO HANDLE MY KID because no its not right the kid did that but its also not yours [sic]," a further user added.
Another person didn't agree, writing: "Someone messes with my cat, they will be dealing with me."
Someone else shared the same sentiments, saying: "Just goes to show you that if you don't teach your kids respect, somebody else will!"
After thousands of people commented on the situation, Shannon was forced to explain herself a little more, writing: "[People] r so mad over this, the kid and his dad were laughing about it today, we r friends (also might I add the dad never knew what his son done which is why he was mad to begin with) also the kid is 13 he rlly looks fkn 10 lmao [sic]." She later revealed her neighbor's son was actually 13 years old, but that he just "looks 10".
Shannon also added that after the young boy threw water over her cat, her neighbor became angry at her for throwing water over her son... But that the boy wasn't going to have any repercussions for harming Shannon's innocent pet.
What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you think Shannon went too far? Or did the young boy get a well-deserved taste of his own medicine?
