While the majority of body language cues are used to discover whether the object of your affections is into you, you can also use such signals to determine many other things including, whether someone is disinterested in you, and more interestingly, whether someone is being deceitful or hiding something.
And while we all, from time to time, enjoy pretending we're in some
police procedural, these body language cues do have some real-life practicality. I mean, how many times have you suspected that someone was attempting to evade you, and on how many instances have you questioned whether your significant other was being wholly truthful when they said that they had refrained from playing
video games,
all week long.
And now, it appears you can. Body language experts have revealed the sneaky signs that could mean that your partner is lying to you.
When attempting to decipher someone's body language, it's important to first determine their normal, every-day habits and gestures. As Blanca Cobb, author of Method of the Masters affirms, "when you see a change in their baseline behaviour,
that's your 'aha' moment". She also stresses that unusual body language doesn't always cry deception; things such as work or emotional stress can also produce many of the same tics, such as fidgeting, breaking eye-contact and using filler words such as "um".
One of the sure-fire indicators of shady behaviour is excessive twitching of the eyes and mouth, increased blinking and pursed lips. Cobb states, "When under stress, you'll show snippets of your true emotions on your face. These micro-expressions occur within 1/15th of a second."
So if you notice that your dinner date is blinking with abnormal frequency (Cobb states that more than 70 blinks a minute counts as excessive), you may have good reason to believe they are being disingenuous.
When under duress or in an uncomfortable situation, adults naturally self-soothe. They normally do this by touching their mouth, eyes, ears and nose.
Now, while everyone has different gestures that provide them with comfort, the most common cues in adults are knuckle cracking, crossing legs, tapping fingers, increased yawning, humming, rocking and hair touching. In fact, as Cobb adds, you may notice that the liar in question even starts to scratch themselves. This is because stress negatively affects nerve endings, which causes people to feel itchy.
Further, if someone hides their hands under a table, or tucks them into their pockets, it's likely that they're concealing something.
And lastly, fidgety feet is a damning indicator of guilt. In her book, How to Detect Lies, Fraud and Identity Theft, Traci Brown states: "We have the least control over our feet. When people are answering tough questions and are on the spot, they'll look like they're rocking". She adds, "While doing this, they are saying one thing but feeling another".
Well, there you have it. If you've suspected that your partner or friend has been acting a little off recently, it may be because they're not being forthright about a particular situation.
It's not all bad, however.
