We all remember where we were on 9/11, but for some celebrities, their location on that fateful day ended up saving their lives, thanks to remarkable twists of fate.

Now, as we reflect on the 19th anniversary of the single most deadly terrorist attack in modern history, we're taking a look at the stories of the celebrities who almost perished that fateful day.

One of the biggest names who was scheduled to be inside the World Trade Centre on 9/11 was Michael Jackson, who had a meeting scheduled at the top of one of the towers.

Jackson failed to attend after talking to his family late into the previous night, causing him to oversleep.

"Thankfully, none of us had had a clue that Michael was due at a meeting that morning at the top of one of the Twin Towers," his brother Jermaine Jackson wrote in his biography, You Are Not Alone, the Mirror reports.

"We only discovered this when Mother phoned his hotel to make sure he was okay. She, Rebbie [Jackson], and a few others had left him there around 3:00 AM," he continued.

"'Mother, I’m okay, thanks to you,'" he told his mother. "'You kept me up talking so late that I overslept and missed my appointment.'"

Actor Mark Wahlberg also very nearly lost his life on 9/11, having been scheduled to fly on American Airlines Flight 11. His life was saved by a last-minute decision to attend a music festival in Canada with friends.

"If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did," he later told Men's Journal, the Washington Post reports.

"There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry.'"

Whalberg was slammed for his remarks and later apologized, admitting: "To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous, to begin with, and to suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible.

"I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention."

The UK also almost lost a member of the British Royal Family, Sarah Ferguson, in the attack. On the 110th floor of the North Tower, there were offices belonging to her children's charity, Chances for Children.

Like Jackson, she had a meeting scheduled for 9/11, but she later said in an interview on NBC with Matt Lauer that she was late for it, which unbeknownst to her saved her life, the Daily Record reports.

But the most terrifying near-miss celebrity story is arguably that of Rob Lowe, who flew on the terrorist's dummy run rehearsal flights shortly before the attack.

When later asked if there was any hint about what was to come on board the flight, Wahlberg said that it couldn't have been more ordinary and went on to testify against attacker Zacarias Moussaoui.

"I flew with the 911 hijackers on the dry run, without realizing," he said, the Telegraph reports. "I was shooting The West Wing in DC at the time and I always took the flight that leaves Dulles to Los Angeles that they eventually put into the Pentagon."

"I made the flight a lot and I didn’t think anything of it. I got on the flight and it was packed, small plane.

"Looked around the cabin, don't remember anything in particular, nobody looked scary, nobody looked like a terrorist. It looked like an absolutely normal flight."

While these celebrities might have survived 9/11 thanks to lucky twists of fate, 2,977 people and over 25,000 people suffered non-fatal injuries that day, the Washington Post reports.

May those who lost their lives in the attacks forever rest in peace.
