Andre Braugher's cause of death has been revealed, days after it was confirmed that he sadly passed away at the age of 61.
Best known for his roles in hit shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Men of a Certain Age, Braugher was a well-known and versatile actor who tragically passed away on Monday (December 11).
At the time, the two-time Emmy Award-winning actor's representative Jennifer Allen had released a short statement saying that Braugher had died from a brief illness.
Now, it has been disclosed by Allen that Braugher was diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago before tragically succumbing to the disease this week, as reported by The New York Post.
Born on July 1, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois, Braugher honed his craft at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. His acting career spanned over five decades and encompassed a wide range of roles in film, television, and theater.
One of his most notable achievements was his portrayal of the stoic, composed Detective Frank Pembleton in the critically acclaimed television series Homicide: Life on the Street.
Braugher's compelling performance in the 1993 drama earned him widespread recognition, including an Emmy Award in 1998 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
The late actor also received numerous accolades and nominations for his beloved role as Captain Raymond Holt in the hit US sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which ran from 2013 to 2021.
Braugher starred alongside Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Dirk Blocker, Joel McKinnon Miller, and Andre Vermeulen.
Many of Braugher's colleagues on the popular TV series took to social media to share their heartbreaking tributes following news of his death.
Crews, who starred as Lt. Terry Jeffords, was the first member of the cast to post about the loss, writing: "Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you, and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent.
"This hurts. You left us too soon," the 55-year-old White Chicks star continued. "You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness, and your friendship.
"Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like. Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man," he added.
Peretti, who played Holt's quirky and comedic assistant Gina Linetti, shared her former co-stars' posts before writing her own.
"Love you. Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat. You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep," the 45-year-old penned. "I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick.
"Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won't," she added.
In addition to this, Marc Evan Jackson, who played Braugher's on-screen husband, Kevin, posted a photo of the pair on Twitter with a short but sweet captain, writing: "O Captain. My Captain."
Braugher is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, also an actor on Homicide: Life on the Street, and three sons.
Our thoughts continue to be with the late actor's family, friends, and fans at this time.
