Argentina is the winner of the 2022 World Cup after facing France in the nail-biting final, which came down to penalties in the last moments of the tournament.
After the soccer tournament began on November 20 with 32 participating teams, the final two countries - Argentina and France - faced off in the final on December 18.
The tense final match ended up going to penalties after extra time saw France and Argentina draw 3-3, before Argentina ultimately won 4-2 with a kick from Lionel Messi.
The two countries have played each other three times in the World Cup, the last meeting being in Russia in 2018 when Didier Deschamps’s side won 4-3 in the round of 16, while Argentina won the first two meetings in 1930 and 1978.
But today, Argentina reigned supreme.
Argentina have become the first country from outside Europe to lift the trophy since Brazil, 20 years ago in Japan, after Lionel Messi scored the final goal, cementing their spot as champions.
The final had soccer fans on the edge of their seats until the final moments, with France initially having been 2-0 down, before spectacularly bringing it back.
Despite not taking home the trophy on the night, France have much to be proud of regardless, as Kylian Mbappe became only the second player to score three times in a World Cup final, matching England's Geoff Hurst in 1966.
Throughout the soccer tournament, France finished at the top of the Group B table, having beaten the likes of Australia and Denmark, but falling short to Tunisia in a 1-0 loss. However, they regained their position and beat Poland 3-1 in the round of 16.
The French then faced off against England in a grueling 2-1 quarterfinals match and then beat Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals before squaring up to Argentina in the final.
Meanwhile, for the South American side, they also finished at the top of the Group C table, despite starting the competition with a 2-0 loss against Saudi Arabia.
However, they defeated Mexico and Poland, and then beat Australia 2-1 in the round of 16. Lionel Messi's side then went on to face the Netherlands in an intense quarter-finals match - winning 4-3 on penalties.
The team then triumphed over Croatia with a swift 3-0 win in the semi-finals before facing off against France.
Despite both teams having one hell of a tournament, only Argentina managed to pick up the trophy after beating France in the 90-minute match.
