Britney Spears has revealed in an audio message that she has rejected religion as a result of ongoing tension between herself and her sons.

The 40-year-old pop star took to Instagram on Monday (September 5) to address her relationships with her sons, Jayden Federline, 15, and Sean Preston Federline, 16, after their controversial interview with his father, Kevin Federline.

After questioning her fractured relationship with her children, the 'Toxic' singer ended the three-minute recording (that has now been deleted) by saying that her religious beliefs have been impacted by her family's perception of her.

"God would not [have allowed] that to happen to me if God existed. I don't believe in God anymore because of the way my children and my family have treated me," she said. "There is nothing to believe in anymore. I'm an atheist, y'all."

The 'Baby One More Time' singer began the recording by saying: "I can totally understand why my family would have a problem with me doing my own thing, maybe 'cause I never have," which is in reference to the 13 years she spent  under her father Jamie Spears' conservatorship.

The singer then addressed her youngest son directly, saying: "So Jayden, as you undermine my behavior just like my family always has, with 'Hope she gets better, I will pray for her'. Pray for what? I keep working so I can pay off mom’s legal fees and her house?"

"Do you guys want me to get better so I can continue to give your dad $40,000 a month? Or is the reason behind you guys deciding to be hateful because it’s actually over in two years and you don’t get anything?" Spears added.

Federline - who was previously married to the Grammy-winner from 2004 to 2007 - was reportedly given 70% custody of Jayden and Preston in 2019.

Listen to Spears' audio below:

The 44-year-old former dancer claimed in his interview with Jayden that aired on the UK's ITV last month that he believes the conservatorship - which Spears has referred to as "pure abuse" - was justified.

Elsewhere in the interview, Jayden defended his grandfather, saying he "doesn't deserve all the hatred he is getting in the media" and expressed support for his grandmother, Lynne, who Spears has blamed for supporting the conservatorship.

The interview also revealed that the 'Stronger' singer's sons chose not to attend her wedding to Sam Asghari because "she didn't invite the whole family" which would've led to further conflict.

Jayden also divulged in the interview that he disapproves of her use of social media, saying, "it's almost like she has to post something on Instagram to get some attention".

Spears maintained in Monday's recording that she constantly asked her sons for more time together, but that they would leave her house early during scheduled custody visits.

"If I didn't shower you guys with gifts, and have amazing food ready and play a [expletive] saint, it was still never good enough," she said.

The 'Piece Of Me' hitmaker also recalled a time she directly told Jayden she wanted to see him more and alleges that the teenager "called [his] dad" and that she never saw him again after.

Jayden - who lives with his brother Sean Preston at Federline's home in Los Angeles - disclosed that he does want to see his mother again, despite their differences.

He added that he believes her 13-year-long conservatorship went on "a little too long" before her freedom last year, and that Jamie had only been "trying to pursue her dream" in the beginning.
