Britney Spears has spoken out after receiving backlash for an Instagram post where she appeared to body-shame Christina Aguilera's backup dancers.
As previously reported, the Toxic singer posted an image of a quote to her Instagram page, which read: "I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people."
The 40-year-old captioned the image: "I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my children … my dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera's dancers I would have looked extremely small… I mean why not talk about it ?? Don't you think my confidence would have been a bit better if I could choose where I lived, ate, whom I called on the phone, dated and who was on stage with me !!!"
She added: "It's hard sometimes now I see how much of my womanhood was stripped away at that time and every person sat back and didn't say a thing !!! Anyways … I will be here talking bout things people NEVER talked about !!!"
Many of Spears' 42 million followers on the platform voiced their distaste at the post, with many people calling her out for "body-shaming."
One user even commented: "Britney we love you-but this post is harmful to others who live in bigger bodies and people who experience [eating disorders]. We know [you've] been hurt. But let's not hurt others in our healing."
In the wake of the backlash, Aguilera allegedly unfollowed Spears, causing fans to speculate whether their on-and-off again feud had been reignited.
Now, it seems the 'Circus' singer has addressed the negative responses to her post, uploading a cutesy drawing of two pixies emblazoned with the names Avery and Olette - perhaps a depiction of her and Aguilera.
She added one of her trademark lengthy captions, writing: "By no means was I being critical of Christina's beautiful body, it is what it is !!! I flew to see her show once and the main thing I noticed was the difference of our people on stage !!!"
Spears added: "By no means did I even mention Christina, look at my post !!! I was inspired by her show and she is a beautiful woman of power … Thank you @xtina for inspiring me !!! To be honest, I'm not trying to be critical of anybody. What I posted is a projection of the insecurities I deal with all the time as a result of how my parents and the media have treated me … I would never intentionally body shame anybody because I know what it feels like …"
"I struggle with this because of how I feel about myself, not because I hate how anybody looks … I feel like my family knew I was insecure and people were trying to purposefully feed into this insecurity by not letting me have a choice in the people who were on stage with me. I appreciate you all being understanding with me as I figure out this new life I'm living !!!
Her apologetic words were met with praise from her fans, with one person writing: "And this is how a true Queen speaks."
"Don't worry, Britney. Your true fans knows you didn't mean any harm in that post," someone else added.
Fans and followers of the singer are used to her openness and honesty surrounding the termination of her 13-year conservatorship - which saw virtually every aspect of Spears' life micromanaged and controlled by her father, Jamie Spears.
While she may not always get her messages across in the best way, you have to admit she is one tough cookie - perhaps even 'Stronger' than she thought she could be.

Christina Aguilera has appeared to unfollow Britney Spears following an odd body-shaming post the 'Toxic' singer published on her Instagram this week.
The singers seemed to have reignited their decades-long feud - which began in the early noughties as the two pop stars were constantly pitted against each other by the media. Now, however, they've got something new to argue about, after Spears posted a strange quote that body-shamed Aguilera's backup dancers.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, the 'Circus' singer - who regularly uploads videos and lengthy posts detailing horrific revelations about her 13-year conservatorship - uploaded an image of a quote that read: "I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people."
The 40-year-old's accompanying caption touched upon how unconfident she was made to feel during her legal conservatorship, writing: "I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my children … my dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera's dancers I would have looked extremely small 💃💃💃… I mean why not talk about it??"
"Don't you think my confidence would have been a bit better if I could choose where I lived, ate, whom I called on the phone, dated and who was on stage with me!!!," she stated, before adding: "It's hard sometimes now I see how much of my womanhood was stripped away at that time and every person sat back and didn't say a thing!!! Anyways … I will be here talking bout things people NEVER talked about 🙄🙄🙄 !!!"
The post was met with a lot of criticism, with many of Spears' 42 million followers kindly telling her that the post constituted body-shaming. One follower wrote: "Body shaming others is not the move."
"Oof. Love Britt- but this was in bad taste. Body shaming to make yourself feel better is not where it's at," another added.
"Confidence comes from within, not shaming your back up dancers for being too skinny?," someone else chimed in.
Another person commented: "You can speak YOUR truth without making an effort to offend someone."
While another wrote: "No need to put another woman down to feel better about yourself. Focus on your healing."
While it hasn't been confirmed when Aguilera unfollowed Spears, it's clear that she's definitely not following her post-body-shaming Instagram upload. This comes months after Spears publicly slammed Aguilera for choosing not to speak out in support as her conservatorship ended.
Aguilera, 41, was asked at the Latin Grammy Awards in November 2021 whether she'd spoken to Spears after she was freed from her conservatorship. The Dirrty singer's publicist jumped in before she could reply, saying: "No we're not doing that tonight, I'm sorry, thank you though, bye!" Irish entertainment site, Goss, reported.
Aguilera then quickly chimed in with: "Can't… but I'm happy for her."
She was swiftly bashed by Spears on her Instagram stories, after the mom-of-two posted the clip and wrote: "I love and adore everyone who supported me…but refusing to speak when you know the truth is equivalent to a lie!!!!"
She added: "13 years being in a corrupt abusive system yet why is it such a hard topic for people to talk about??? I'm the one who went through it!!!! All the supporters who spoke up and supported me thank you…yes I do matter!!!!!"
Eventually, several weeks later, Aguilera voiced her support for Spears on The Enrique Santos Show. After being asked whether she'd spoken to Spears since the termination of her conservatorship, the mom-of-one replied that she had not yet reconnected with the singer.
She stated: "It's a subject that I definitely want to be careful of because I never want to speak out of [turn] about somebody that I have so much respect and admiration for. I will just say what I do feel comfortable saying, as I've said before actually and stated: that I couldn't be happier for her."
"Every woman deserves to feel empowered and to own that for themselves however they see fit," Aguilera added.
As of Tuesday, September 13, Spears' controversial post is still up on her Instagram, much to many of her fans' disapproval.

Britney Spears has taken to Instagram to call out body improvement specialists — and fans are praising her for spreading the word of body positivity.
Spears took to Instagram today (October 15) to share a topless picture of herself, and the caption was nothing short of empowering. "What is it with consultations for body improvements," she questioned, before revealing that she has previously felt hurt by such experiences.
"Is it me or is anybody else offended by these experiences … maybe I’m extremely sensitive … either way I would rather fall off a cliff than have a doctor tell me what he thinks is wrong with my body image … lesson learned!!!! Psss kiss my white ass [sic]," the 39-year-old added.
"Too many people are getting way too much work done and are setting the wrong standard for young women. You don't have to have plastic surgery to be beautiful. Filters don't exist in real life. You go girl," wrote one fan, while another praised, "Britney is taking her power back and I love to see it."
A third wrote: "Don't change a thing [...] You look amazing" — and we agree!
This comes after a judge suspended Spears' father, Jamie, from her 13-year-conservatorship — which she denounced as "abusive" back in June.
On September 30, Judge Brenda Penny said that Spears' involvement with the legal arrangement was "toxic" and "untenable", and ordered him to be removed.
Her father's attorney, Vivian Thoreen, issued a statement following the news, stating that it was "disappointing" and a "loss for Britney."
"Respectfully, the court was wrong to suspend Mr Spears, put a stranger in his place to manage Britney’s estate, and extend the very conservatorship that Britney begged the court to terminate earlier this summer," Thoreen said, per The Guardian.
“It was Mr Spears who took the initiative to file the petition to terminate the conservatorship when neither Britney’s former court-appointed counsel nor her new privately retained attorney would do so," it continued. "It was Mr Spears who asked the court at yesterday’s hearing to immediately terminate the conservatorship while Britney’s own attorney argued against it. Despite the suspension, Mr Spears will continue to look out for the best interests of his daughter and work in good faith towards a positive resolution of all matters."
The next step in the Toxic singer's ongoing conservatorship battles comes on November 12, when a hearing will discuss the complete termination of the conservatorship.
On July 14, Spears was allowed to appoint her own lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, who has maintained that her father's removal is necessary for the pop star's wellbeing. At the hearing, Rosengart asserted that it was the first step towards ending a "Kafkaesque nightmare."
He added that Spears "has been abused by this man not only for the past decade, but since her childhood."

Those of you who happen to follow pop megastar Britney Spears will know that she's no stranger to posting topless pictures and videos of herself.
In fact, last Thursday, the 40-year-old 'Toxic' hitmaker sparked backlash among some of her fans when she uploaded 10 topless posts - nine pictures and one video - all within the span of an hour.
While in a London hotel room, she stripped down to nothing but a pair of black and blue leopard print underwear and staged her very own private photo shoot. Taking to Instagram, she then posted nine photos and a video of her lying in bed topless.
Some of Spears' followers felt her incessant skin-baring posts were distasteful and decided to call her out for it.
One fan took to Twitter to write: "I can't believe I am saying this but @britneyspears STOP being Naked on Instagram, please. #BritneySpears."
Another added: "Sadly had to unfollow britney spears on insta cause i would open the app in public and her naked pics would just pop up."
A third penned: "I’m going to say this, I really really really love that Britney Spears is able to express herself now that she has this freedom that she has but I am so tired of seeing her naked on my Instagram timeline…#NoShade."
Spears' penchant for provocative snaps may be turning some of her fans off, but it turns out that she has a good reason for posting photos of that nature to her Instagram platform.
Last year, the Crossroads star took to the photo-sharing app and told her followers in a since-deleted post that she wants to be able to express herself on her own terms after years of feeling "too self conscious about my body."
Britney stated: "I’ve had a billion shows where I’ve done that and to my horror uhhh well … sometimes I didn’t look so great … TOO MANY TIMES and it’s embarrassing as f*** but in my imagination it felt great!!!!
"I mean I don’t want anybody to see the big dimple on my a** but I feel like performing made me too self-conscious about my body and that’s not attractive. [sic]"
She continued: "I was born into this world naked and I honestly feel like the weight of the would has been on my shoulders and it’s made me view myself that way !!!! I wanted to see myself in a lighter way … naked.
"I am a woman …. a beautiful … sensitive woman who needs to look at myself in my purest form !!! No … I’m not going to do topless pics for the rest of my life cause that would get boring but it sure as hell helps when you need to be enlightened. [sic]"

Britney Spears has had an interesting several days on social media - following the backlash from her body-shaming post this week, the 'Toxic' singer has received support from her fans after uploading a video of herself crying while dancing.
The 40-year-old has become somewhat of a cultural icon in recent years, as her 42 million followers seem to love her energetic improvised dance videos. This week, however, fans got a little more than they bargained for when Spears burst into tears halfway through her routine.
Posting the clip to her Instagram page, Spears captioned it: "It's been a while since I've cried on camera !!! It's not a breakdown a**holes, it's a release that I’ve needed for a very long time now !!! Spiritual experience for sure !!! I think I need to do that way more !!! Psss… bawling."
Many of her followers - including her new husband, Sam Asghari - sent messages of support, while others appeared to express concerns about her mental health.
"Awww babe," one person wrote, "There are so many of us here that support you in whatever you need to do for your journey! We can't even fathom what it must feel like to be trapped for over 13 years. You have come leaps and bounds! We adore you."
"If we don't release our tears they build up and are stored as pain. I am in awe of how you process your emotions so gracefully," another commented.
Spears' husband, Sam Asghari also posted a message of support to his new bride, saying: "Vulnerability=strength=lioness."
Though, not all comments offered support - many users seemed to be worried about the singer's mental health, with one user commenting: "Looks like a cry for help....."
"I'm not perfect. And I'm a big fan of Britney… But watching this with no audio actually made me shiver. It's not the first time, but, goodness gracious… if you love this woman stop encouraging this behavior. We need a new movement. This woman needs help before it's too late [sic]," someone else wrote.
"Try watching this video without audio, the range of emotions in 1 minute is seriously scaring me," said another person, while someone else chimed in with: "All these videos are so bizarre! You can't blame people for being concerned."
The post came mere hours after Spears wished her sons - Jayden James, 16, and Sean Preston, 17 - a happy birthday in a now-deleted Instagram post.
Her two sons, who she shares with her ex Kevin Federline, have not seen their mother in months after saying they were embarrassed by her constant social media posts in the wake of her terminated conservatorship.
As previously reported, Jayden joined his father - who received roughly $1 million after his divorce from Spears and continues to receive more than $20,000 a month in alimony from her, per Newsweek - in a TV interview to discuss his severely fractured relationship with his mother.
Jayden also defended his grandfather, Jamie Spears, who controlled Britney as her conservator for 13 years - controlling every aspect of his daughter's financial and medial affairs. "They are not bad people. They know what we are going through now. They want our future to be what we want it to be. They just want to watch over us," Jayden stated in his interview.
He also added that his mother's risqué uploads on Instagram bothered him, saying: "It's almost like she has to post something on Instagram to get some attention. This has gone on for years and years and years, and there's a high chance that this will never stop, but I'm hoping for me that she will stop."
Following the interview, which was aired on ITV in the UK, Spears maintained that she did the best she could as a mother to her sons, despite being limited by her conservatorship.
In since-deleted audio messages, the 'Circus' singer said she feels she has "no purpose anymore," amid the damaged relationship she has with her sons.
While Spears has become the butt of harmless jokes about her improvised dancing and lengthy captions on social media, we have to explore the wider picture.
The media failed Britney for over a decade - we are to blame for allowing the constant hate and misogynistic vitriol that was directed at the mom-of-two for years. Now, we have to ask ourselves the question: how will we prevent this from happening again?
