Sometimes in life, you have to make decisions for the greater good of your mental health, and for Cameron Diaz, this meant quitting acting.

In a new interview on Gwyneth Paltrow's In Goop Health: The Sessions podcast, the star explained that her decision to stop acting brought her "peace".

Diaz starred in countless movies during her career including There's Something About Mary and Charlie's Angels, but she has not acted since Annie, which was released in 2014.

In the video below, female celebs (including Diaz!) take part in the "boss b**** challenge":

This happened when she was asked what it was like to "walk away from a movie career of that magnitude."

Diaz replied: "A peace. I got a peace in my soul, because I finally was taking care of myself."

She added: "It's a strange thing to say, I know a lot of people won't understand it, I know you understand it, but it's so intense to work at that level and be that public and put yourself out there.

"There's a lot of energy coming at you at all times when you're really visible as an actor and doing press and putting yourself out there."

Diaz made her big-screen debut at the age of 21 opposite Jim Carey in 1994's The Mask, but said that until she gave up acting, she had no time for her personal life because her schedule was a "grind".

She said that working on major movie sets could be "overwhelming" and she wanted to be able to look after herself again instead of having everything done for her.

"I stopped and really looked at my life," she said. "When you're making a movie, they own you. You're there for 12 hours a day for months on end, you have no time for anything else."

Diaz married Benji Madden, 41, of Good Charlotte in 2015 and the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Raddix, last December.

"We got married pretty much immediately because we realized we just had to do it," Diaz told Paltrow.

"We went hard for a few years where we just ironed it out, hacked it out. It was a lot of work, but we had to."

She added: "I'm older than him, not a lot older, but he was at the place in his life where he also wanted to do that as well."
Diaz confirmed that she has retired from acting in 2018, however, per the Evening Standard, she did not rule out a potential return in the future, saying in April: "I'm never gonna say never, because I'm not a person who says never about anything."
