Carly Simon has paid a heartbreaking tribute to her two sisters, Joanna and Lucy, after they passed away within a day of one another.
The legendary musician lost her sister Joanna, 85, to thyroid cancer on Wednesday (October 19). Just hours later, her other sister Lucy passed away from metastatic breast cancer on Thursday (October 20).
Simon's manager Larry Ciania confirmed the deaths, and the singer herself honored them in a statement to CNN.
"I am filled with sorrow to speak about the passing of Joanna and Lucy Simon," the 'You're So Vain' singer wrote, adding: "Their loss will be long and haunting."
Simon went on to celebrate her sisters' long lives, writing: "As sad as this day is, it's impossible to mourn them without celebrating their incredible lives that they lived."
She continued: "We were three sisters who not only took turns blazing trails and marking courses for one another, we were each others secret shares. The co-keepers of each other’s memories."
Simon's only other sibling, Peter, passed away in 2018. In her statement, she reflected on being the last surviving member of their family.
"I have no words to explain the feeling of suddenly being the only remaining direct offspring of Richard and Andrea Simon," she wrote.
The 'Anticipation' singer finished reflecting on the influence her sisters had had on those around them. "They touched everyone they knew and those of us they’ve left behind will be lucky and honored to carry their memories forward," she wrote.
All three of the Simon sisters were musically gifted and left their mark on the music world. Joanna Simon was a successful opera singer, while Lucy Simon was a Tony Award-nominated composer and performer best known for her work on The Secret Garden and Dr. Zhivago musicals.
Our thoughts are with Simon and her family at this time.
