It would great if all our favourite on-screen couples could translate their chemistry to real life, but that isn't always the case.

As us mere mortals will know, sometimes you just don't get along with your co-workers, and that's fine! But unfortunately for these movie stars, they had to pretend to be very much in love while battling it out between takes. The price of fame, eh?

From Dirty Dancing to Kramer vs. Kramer, we break down 13 romances that definitely remained on camera.

The Notebook — Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

While they may have starred in everyone's favourite tearjerker, it will come as a surprise that McAdams and Gosling didn't set each other's worlds on fire during filming.

Sure, they later ended up going out for three years, but director Nick Cassavetes revealed to VH1 that Gosling once came to him, and asked that he find another actress to read with him for one of the film's biggest scenes. "They were really not getting along one day on set. Really not," he told the outlet.

McAdams was less than impressed and an intense "screaming and shouting" match ensued...

Four Christmases – Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn

Witherspoon and Vaughn had a personality clash on the set of the 2017 holiday film, Four Christmases, which made their time together pretty unpleasant.

An insider told the Daily News: "Vince rolls onto set in the morning looking like he just came in from a night out, while Reese will arrive early looking camera-ready. Then Reese tries to force Vince into blocking out each scene and running through their lines as Vince tries to convince her that he’s an ad-libber and wants to play around and see where the scene goes."

Witherspoon even allegedly forced production to cut a sex scene from the movie because she was so put off by her hedonistic co-star!

Dirty Dancing — Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze

Sure, they starred in one of the most iconic rom-com's of all time — but you guessed it: Grey and Swayze were far from firm friends.

In his 2009 memoir, The Time of My Life, Swayze revealed that he found Grey's "silly moods" difficult to deal with while filming the 1987 classic. He also said that he found it frustrating that Grey would burst into tears anytime she was criticised, and that she'd forced them "to do scenes over and over". It looks like all their troubles were eased when they stopped working together, however, as they went onto become good mates before Swayze's death.

Romeo and Juliet – Clare Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio

Far from star crossed lovers, Danes and DiCaprio didn't have the easiest ride on the set of Baz Luhrmann's 1996 adaption of the Shakespeare play.

While Danes was only 16-years-old when she starred as Juliet Capulet, she found a then 22-year-old DiCaprio to be too immature for her, largely due to the fact that he loved to play pranks on the cast and crew, per the Telegraph. The pair reportedly avoided each other as much as they could whilst filming.

Kate Winslet, on the other hand, absolutely loved DiCaprio's boyish sense of humour while they worked together on Titanic, according to Rolling Stone.

The Tourist – Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp

Reports indicate that the two A-listers couldn't stand each other on the set of 2010's romance cum thriller, The Tourist.

An unnamed source said that Jolie quickly tired of Depp, saying: "She’s getting fed up with Johnny. Their chemistry was supposed to fly off the charts, but in private, they’re not getting along.

The insider also revealed that the feeling was mutual, adding, "Johnny retreats to his own trailer until he’s called out again. He thinks she’s really full of herself." Ouch, burn!

Kramer vs. Kramer – Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffmann

On the set of the cult film about a couple filing for a divorce, Hoffman reportedly took it upon himself to teach Streep how to act, per a 1979 interview, reported by Slate. In regards to their first meeting, Streep said: "He came up to me and said, ‘I’m Dustin - burp - Hoffman,’ and he put his hand on my breast. What an obnoxious pig, I thought."

And while the actress — who later earned her first Oscar for the role — was getting over the death of her boyfriend, John Cazale, Hoffman allegedly taunted her about it in order to get her "into character". He also "helped her" by slapping her across the face before the cameras started rolling, and then unexpectedly threw a glass at her while seated at a table.

Streep later said that she accepted Hoffman's apology for his behaviour on set.

An Officer and a Gentleman – Debra Winger and Richard Gere

An Officer and a Gentleman was one of the most passionate romances to come out of the '80s, but while the on-set chemistry between Winger and Gere sizzled, behind-the-scenes it did not.

According to her co-star, Louis Gosset Jr., Winger said Gere was a "brick wall", and that there was "tension" between them. She didn't have warm words for the director, Taylor Hackford, either, who she described as "an animal".

Tomorrow Never Dies – Teri Hatcher and Pierce Brosnan

On the set of Tomorrow Never Dies, former 007, Brosnan, was not keen on his Bond girl, Hatcher.

"I got very upset with her," he said of her timekeeping. "She was always keeping me waiting for hours. I must admit I let slip a few words which weren’t very nice."

As it turns out, the Desperate Housewives actress was pregnant and suffering from debilitating morning sickness. Always worth giving the benefit of the doubt, Pierce!

Sliver – Sharon Stone and William Baldwin

Hot on the success of Basic Instinct, Stone allegedly enjoyed "torturing" her on-screen love interest, William Baldwin, to amuse herself between takes.

As reported by Heart, director Phil Noyce told his biographer: "I ended up having to shoot many of their close-ups with only one of them in the room at a time, because they didn’t want to look at each other."

It's also rumoured that she bit his tongue so hard during a sex scene that he was left unable to speak for days. And was it worth it? No, 1993's Sliver absolutely bombed at the box office.

Vacancy – Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson

Now, here's a pair that really couldn't stand each other. Beckinsale is said to have hated Wilson's "diva behaviour", as well as his habit of bragging about his late-night partying and "conquests" during the making of the 2007 film.

And the feeling was mutual. Per the Telegraph, he actually refused to be on set while she was shooting her scenes, and sent his stand-in instead. Beckinsale even sent a photo of herself to the set when Wilson was shooting. The note read: "Read your lines to this—it will be better for both of us."

I Love Trouble – Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte

There was certainly some trouble between Roberts and Nolte while they worked together on the 1994 romantic caper, and it lasted beyond filming.

Like Beckinsale and Wilson, their clear animosity meant that they had to shoot some of their scenes separately. But afterwards, Roberts didn't hold back. She described Nolte as "completely disgusting", to which he retaliated: "She’s not a nice person, everyone knows that."

And it didn't end there. In a 2009 interview on The Late Show with David Letterman, the Pretty Woman actress performed an "impression" of a former co-star, where she had an expletive-ridden tantrum. It was later revealed to be Nolte, to no one's surprise...

Some Like it Hot – Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis

Despite once being lovers, the two titans of Hollywood's 'Golden Era' clashed on the set of Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot.

Curtis said that kissing Monroe "was like kissing Hitler". And recalling the infamous yacht scene, he continued: "It was awful. She nearly choked me to death by deliberately sticking her tongue down my throat into my windpipe." He did allude to Monroe's ongoing mental health and addiction issues, however, conceding, "She’d gone funny, her mind was all over the place."

Blade Runner – Sean Young and Harrison Ford

While the characters of Rachael and Deckard gave some heart to Ridley Scott's 1982 cult sci-fi film, their off-screen relationship was fraught. Members of the crew allegedly referred to the steamy scene between Ford and Young as "the hate scene" because they couldn't bear to be in each other's company, per Heart.

Young later said of her time with Ford: "When you’re twenty and you're insecure, you hope that your leading man will be like, ‘It’s ok, you’ll be fine’… and Harrison wasn’t particularly generous that way," as reported by Variety.
