Abortion joke which caused Zara Larsson to lose $3,000,000 deal
Zara Larsson has revealed she lost out on a huge $3,000,000 brand deal after making an abortion joke that divided fans online. The Swedish singer, 28, said she has no regrets despite the fallout and criticism that followed.
The controversy started after Larsson commented on a TikTok video posted by a fan from one of her concerts. The fan’s clip included a bold caption that quickly caught attention and led to a viral moment.
Larsson responded directly to the video, which only added fuel to the debate, with many social media users split over whether the joke crossed a line.
The comment that sparked backlash
The fan wrote: “I didn't know I was pregnant here but at least my baby got to hear 'Midnight Sun' before I aborted it,” in the text overlay of the clip.
Larsson replied in the comments: "I killed the performance and then you killed it after the performance purrrrrr."
While some people found the exchange humorous, others criticized the singer for joking about a sensitive topic.
Singer says she has no regrets
Addressing the backlash in a new video, Larsson said: “Lately with the abortion joke, which was very funny by the way, I lost a three million dollar deal and I was like okay, wtf,”
She made it clear that the lost deal has not changed her views, adding: “If you don’t agree me thinking that women should have access to abortion or that we could have a joking conversation about it, we are just not meant to be partners.”
Larsson continued: “And I don’t give a f**k about it. You can give me a million DMs, you can send me a million comments about ‘boo, boo, boo, you are a bad person, you wicked witch’.
“I don’t give a rats ass because I am so sure of my stance in that.”
Larsson hits back at critics
The singer also addressed those who argued abortion is not something to joke about, saying she does not plan to debate people who strongly disagree with her.
She said: "Sorry, that’s funny… Sorry if you don’t have humor.
"But also, I’m not really here to argue with the people who are very against abortions for whatever reason because we’re so fundamentally different in the way we view the world, at least on this topic."
Larsson went on to question why abortion is often treated as a taboo subject, adding: "Why do you feel like abortion is only OK when it’s a very hard decision, when it’s something that women have to struggle with going through, when it’s emotionally or physically painful?"
"Why does that make it morally superior to someone just wanting an abortion for whatever reason?
"Why is it only morally OK when women have to suffer? Now riddle me that.
"I feel like by joking about stuff like that, which is a 'serious topic', it also makes it something that we can just talk about.
"It doesn’t have to be taboo. It doesn’t have to be this bad thing that women do."
