Alec Baldwin has spoken out following the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Hutchins died at the age of 42 on October 21 while on the set of the movie Rust - a Western that was being filmed in New Mexico. She was fatally shot by actor and producer Alec Baldwin after he had discharged a prop firearm, CNN reports.

After being shot at approximately 1:50PM, Hutchins was airlifted to a nearby hospital, but sadly died of her injuries.

The movie's director, 48-year-old Joel Souza, suffered a shoulder injury in the incident and was transported to Christus St. Vincent's Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Investigations into the tragic incident remain ongoing, but yesterday, Baldwin spoke out about the cinematographer's death.

Speaking to paparazzi on Saturday in Manchester, Vermont, the actor revealed that he could not comment on the investigation, but did tell reporters: "She was my friend, she was my friend.

"The day I arrived in Santa Fe to start shooting, I took her to dinner with Joel [Souza], the director. We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together, and then this horrible event happened."

Baldwin also revealed that he is in contact with Hutchins' husband and nine-year-old son.

"We are in constant contact with him because we're very worried about his family and his kid," the actor said.

On Wednesday, Sheriff Adan Mendoza spoke at a press conference between the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office and district attorney's office. Per CNN, Mendoza told reporters: "The facts are clear: a weapon was handed to Mr. Baldwin.

"The weapon is functional and fired a live round, killing Ms. Hutchins and injuring Mr. Souza."

In a series of tweets shared on October 22, Baldwin wrote: "There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.

"I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."
