Amy Schumer has responded to the backlash she received after she jokingly referred to Kirsten Dunst as a "seat filler" at the Oscars on Sunday night.

As far as controversy at the 94th Academy Awards goes, little compares to Oscar nominee and eventual winner Will Smith smacking presenter Chris Rock after the latter made a joke about his wife's buzz cut.

But there were a couple of other moments here and there that got some viewers at home riled up - including one where this year's co-host Schumer refers to Dunst as a "seat filler".

Taking to her Instagram Story on Monday, Schumer explained that the moment had been scripted, something which Dunst agreed to.

She wrote in a message to her 11.5 million followers: "Hey, I appreciate the love for Kirsten Dunst. I love her too! That was a choreographed bit she was in on. Wouldn't disrespect that queen like that."

It all went down when Schumer, 40, approached the Marie Antoinette star, 39, who was sitting at a table with her partner and co-star, Jesse Plemons.

Check out the moment below:

"Here’s a seat filler," the comedian said in jest as she gestured toward Dunst. "Honey, do you want to go to the bathroom?"

The I Feel Pretty star then sat down in Dunst's place and started a conversation with Plemons.

"Jesse, I loved you in Power of the Dog," she told the 33-year-old actor, who responded saying: "You know, that was my wife, Amy."

(FYI, the two got engaged in 2017 but are yet to announce a marriage.)

Schumer then quipped: "You’re married to that seat filler?"

When Plemons responded with a nod, she replied: "Oh, that’s weird."

Without knowing the full situation, viewers were quick to slam Schumer's humor, at the expense of Dunst - a nominee at the ceremony that evening.

One person wrote: "amy schumer of all people calling kristen dunst a seat filler when nobody’s heard of her since 2015."

Another wrote: "I need to say this again Amy Schumer is not funny. Absolutely disrespectful, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst looked so damn uncomfortable."

But as it turns out, it was all just a harmless little joke! I think apologies may be in order for Schumer.
