Amy Schumer responds after people accuse her of stealing one of her best Oscars jokes
Amy Schumer has spoken out after it would appear that a joke she made during last month's Oscars surfaced online months ago.
If you cast your mind back to the 94th annual Academy Awards, you may remember that amid the controversy of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, hosts Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer, and Regina Hall did an amazing job of hosting the ceremony.
Their personalities helped elevate the mood and their jokes had viewers in hysterics.
Schumer, in particular, delivered a zinger when she took to the stage and then took aim at Leonardo DiCaprio, his activism, and his penchant for dating women in their 20s.
Yes, the 40-year-old comedian left people in the audience rather red-faced when she said: "Leonardo DiCaprio, what can I say about him? He has done so much to fight climate change and leave behind a cleaner, greener planet for his girlfriends."
However, despite being a funny gag, it wasn't long before people online noticed that the same joke had already surfaced on Twitter all the way back in December 2021.
The joke was first shared by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer and actor Nicole Conlan, who tweeted months ago: "Leonardo DiCaprio is so passionate about climate change because he wants to leave a better [world] for his girlfriends."
As you can see - the joke is almost word-for-word the same as Schumer's comment, which came more than three months later. And it did not go unnoticed by viewers...
"Sir, I have witnessed a robbery in broad daylight," one person replied, with another adding: "Take legal action."
One Twitter user even quipped: "I knew something was up when I let out a chuckle..."
Now, per The Daily Beast, Schumer has responded to the apparent claim that she stole the joke during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live!
On the show, Schumer said: "OK. Well, I would like to say, I haven’t personally been on Twitter. I’ve had my assistant do it, just so I can remain alive and not kill myself."
She then added: "And also, that joke was written by Suli McCullough. But I thank you guys, always, for making sure that I don’t start thievery.
"I just got to do a lie-detector test on Vanity Fair and they asked me, thank god, 'Have you ever stolen a joke?' and I said no, and it was 'that’s true'.
"So, everybody just chill. It’s crazy. I’m funny enough, I don’t need to steal s**t."
