Ben Affleck's mom's heartbreaking admission about being 83 before her death is leaving people floored
Ben Affleck is reflecting on life, family, and loss following a deeply challenging period.
Speaking candidly in a recent interview with GQ, the Oscar winner opened up about navigating the deaths of both of his parents, Chris and Tim Affleck, who passed away within just two months of each other earlier this year.
The losses have naturally given the actor reason to pause and reflect on his own life path. During the conversation, Affleck shared how the sudden shift in his family dynamic forced him to think more deeply about his personal journey and the finite nature of time.
Despite the emotional weight of the situation, Affleck expressed immense gratitude for the time he shared with his mother, describing her as a brave figure in his life.
Her passing left a profound impression on him and his family, prompting them to come together and honor her memory in meaningful ways.
Affleck's mother's final piece of wisdom
Reflecting on one of the final conversations he had with his mother before her passing, Affleck recalled a poignant exchange that stayed with him. He noted that both of his parents were fortunate to live full, lengthy lives, which provided a sense of comfort despite the pain of losing them.
"My parents were lucky, right? They lived long lives. Longer than the one’s expectation is, whatever. That’s kind of what you get," he said. "I remember my mom said to me at one point, ‘Yeah,’ she said, ‘I had a great life, and I have no regrets.’"
She then shared a perspective that stuck with the actor. "She said, ‘But I thought 83 years would feel like longer.’ I thought, ‘S***, I get it. I bet.’"
Chris Affleck passed away at age 83 on June 2 from cardiopulmonary arrest after receiving a diagnosis late last year. Her death came shortly before her sons learned they would also have to say goodbye to their father.
The double loss caused Affleck to reconsider his perspective on his upbringing and the limited time people get with the ones they love.
"It brings up all these - I mean, your childhood, how you were raised, you see things differently, you appreciate your parents in different ways," Affleck explained. "You realize, yeah, we only get so much time."
Navigating complicated relationships
While Affleck remembered his mother as a "pretty extraordinary and brave" woman whose passing made him fully appreciate her life, his relationship with his father was far more complex. Near the end of Tim Affleck's life, the two shared a distant connection.
Affleck had a "complicated relationship and not a very close one" with his father near the end of Tim’s life "for lots of reasons that I just don’t want to talk about, frankly, to people."
Navigating those interpersonal dynamics taught Affleck a vital lesson about addressing personal friction directly. He noted, "If you don’t deal with it, you don’t fix [it], like, it’s just not going to happen."
Ultimately, Affleck views the passing of his parents through a natural lens. While the experience was painful, he recognizes that losing parents is a natural part of the human journey.
"This is normal," he explained. "I certainly don’t want to outlive my children. That would be the worst thing I can imagine. So, this is the way it’s supposed to go, but it’s still really sad for me."
