Bonnie Tyler, singer of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', dies aged 75
Bonnie Tyler, known for songs such as 'Holding Out for a Hero' and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', has died aged 75.
The singer had come out of a coma in June, but remained unwell in intensive care.
A statement published on the singer's website reads: "Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.
"We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy."
In May, the Wales-born artist was rushed to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, for emergency intestinal surgery.
She was placed in an induced coma to help with her recovery, as it was said that her condition was improving, with doctors "confident" of a recovery despite "slow" progress.
After she came out of her induced coma in June, her team took to social media to update fans on Tyler's condition.
"We are pleased to share that Bonnie is no longer in a coma, but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal," they explained.
It further read: "We would like to thank everyone for the huge outpouring of love and support from all over the world that we have received for Bonnie and want to tell you that she is aware of, and very grateful for, your good wishes."
Tyler's team cancelled or postponed dates for the singer's planned summer tour, hoping that later-in-the-year dates could go ahead, though this tragically wouldn't be the case.
The artist was set to perform at the Sunshine Festival in Worcester this summer, in addition to a number of European dates.
She was also booked to perform at Cardiff's Utilita Arena on December 17, after her summer dates were cancelled following her emergency procedure.
Tyler's final full concert was at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on March 19.
The artist's biggest song of her career was undoubtedly 1983’s Total Eclipse of the Heart, which hit No 1 on the US and UK charts, and became a worldwide pop hit.
She was also behind Holding Out for a Hero, which was best known for featuring on the Footloose soundtrack, while also peaking at No 2 in the UK charts in 1984.
