Caitlyn Jenner says she wants to create a "commission" to determine which transgender girls are "truly trans".

Jenner, 71, made the comments in a recent interview with Fox News about her decision to run as a Republican candidate for the position of governor of California.

She said that a commission would be her solution to the hotly debated topic of whether or not transgender girls should be allowed to compete in girls' sports in schools.

Watch Jenner's interview with Fox News below:

She told the news outlet: "What I would do as governor, I would put together a commission.

"And trans women, who are truly trans, who at a very young age, you know, started proper medical treatment, they've grown up as girls, of course, they should be able to compete in girls' sports."

The former Olympian then described transgender women who have not transitioned as "guys", and explained that their cases would have to be reviewed.

This is a direct contradiction of what she had previously said about the issue of transgender girls competing in girls' sports.

In an interview with TMZ, she said: "This is a question of fairness. That's why I oppose biological boys competing in girls' sports in school."

"It just isn't fair. And we have to protect girls' sports in our schools."

Jenner's comments to Fox News were subsequently slammed by social media users.

One Twitter user implied that Jenner was a traitor to the transgender community.

A second added: "As ludicrous as this (and she) is, I'm wondering why this would only apply to 'trans girls' and not 'trans boys.'"

A third joked: "*commission decides that Caitlyn Jenner isn't truly trans*"

A fourth wrote: "What happens if she doesn’t pass her criteria?"

A fifth wrote: "Hmm. According to Caitlyn Jenner’s own words, she isn't 'truly trans' either."

Meanwhile, a sixth simply wrote: "Considering she transitioned at 65, this is a hell of a take", to which another Twitter user wrote: "And plays in women's golf tournaments."

Per BBC, Jenner described herself as a "proven winner" when it comes to her run for governor, adding that she is the "only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom's disastrous time as a governor".
