A comedian has found his stand-up routine going viral on social media -- but not everybody was laughing.
Late last month, the entertainment world was rocked by the sudden death of Friends star Matthew Perry.
At just 54 years old, Perry was found unresponsive at his home in Los Angeles. Reports state that the actor was found in his hot tub and that first responders were called out for a "water emergency".
Law enforcement sources have informed TMZ that there were no drugs or signs of suspected foul play at the scene. The coroner’s office has since confirmed that Perry's cause of death had been "deferred" at this time. This essentially means that an autopsy has been completed, but the examiner is now awaiting pending toxicology reports, a process that may take several weeks.
In response to the heartbreaking news, many of Perry's fans and co-stars took to social media to pay tribute to the star - including the other five main Friends cast.
However, other responses haven't been as heartfelt.
Comedian Hans Kim has recently shared a video on his TikTok page showing the moment he delivered a couple of Matthew Perry jokes during a stand-up routine in Texas.
Now, comedy is certainly subjective - and it is important to remember that Kim is a comedian just trying to make people laugh - however, some readers may find his content upsetting. Check out the video below:
In the clip, Kim can be seen joking to the audience: "Sad to hear that the great Matthew Perry died alone in a hot tub. For a guy on a show called Friends, he could have used a couple."
And referencing the opening credits of the show in which the cast frolics around in a water fountain, Kim then adds: "Who knew the opening credits [of Friends] were his cry for help?”
Kim boldly shared the clip to TikTok (@djhanskim) with the caption: "Rip matthew perry". However, after the video amassed more than 260,000 views, it's safe to say that the response was split.
Some people certainly saw the funny side, and recognized that Kim was simply joking and exploring some dark humor. "Real comedy is coming back," one person commented, with a second agreeing: "No such thing as too soon. This is the point of comedy, to cope with bad times."
However, there were plenty of people who did think that either the joke was "too soon" after Perry's passing, or just in bad taste altogether.
"I think there is better things to do comedy about than [the] death of someone so recent," one person wrote.
"Besides being totally uncalled for this just isn’t even funny. Humor is so dry and tacky these days," a second person added.
Responding to those who didn't like the gag, some TikTok users even argued that Perry was somebody who appreciated comedy, and would have probably laughed at the joke.
"Mathew Perry would’ve loved this y’all have to stop being soft," one person argued, with another commenting: "For what it’s worth, I think Matthew Perry would’ve laughed at this joke."
Comedy is certainly a contentious issue in these modern times - with people constantly disagreeing over what can or can't be joked about. What do you think? Is there ever a subject matter that should be avoided in comedy? Or is everything fair game when it comes to trying to make people laugh? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
