Soccer ace Cristiano Ronaldo recently broke down in tears during an interview with Piers Morgan, after the journalist showed Juventus player a never-seen-before video clip of his late father, taken a year before his passing in 2004.
Ronaldo's father, Dinis died of an alcoholism-related liver condition aged 52 in September 2005 when the soccer prodigy was just 20 years old. However, Morgan was able to show the now-34-year-old Portuguese star a clip of his dad being interviewed on Norweigan television outside his house. So moved was Ronaldo - who had never seen the footage - that he began to cry.
This is the moment Ronaldo broke down as his late father spoke about how proud he was of his son:After seeing the clip, the soccer legend told Morgan: "I never saw the video. I never saw that video. Unbelievable."
To which Morgan replied: "To hear your father speak about how proud he was of you must mean a lot to you."
"Yes, a lot. I think the interview would be funny, but I didn’t expect to cry. But I never saw these images. I don’t know where you … I have to have these images to show my family." Ronaldo said.
Ronaldo - who is currently the most followed person on Instagram with a whopping 183million followers - was taking part in a TV interview with Morgan titled Cristiano Ronaldo Meets Piers Morgan, which will air on Tuesday ITV in the UK.
The much-admired star spoke candidly about how he never really knew his father due to his alcoholism: "But I really don’t know my father 100%. He was a drunk person. I never spoke with him, like a normal conversation."
To which Morgan highlights how Ronaldo's father never saw the five-time Ballon d'Or award winner become recognized as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. "It was hard. He never saw how great you became," Piers commented.
"Never. Never," Ronaldo replied.
Promoting his upcoming interview, Morgan said: "Ronaldo is a football genius and a global superstar. He’s also a compelling character and this is the most revealing interview he has ever given. Prepare to laugh and cry and to be shocked and inspired."
Piers also posted an image on his Instagram, along with the caption: "It’s a wrap! Just finished an astonishing interview in Turin with @Cristiano – the biggest star on the planet. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be shocked & you’ll be utterly fascinated. An extraordinary footballer, an extraordinary man."
