The Princess of Wales turned heads at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey -- but some royal watchers believe there may have been more to her fashion choice than meets the eye.

Dressed in a striking red Catherine Walker coat dress and a matching Gina Foster pillbox hat, the beloved Princess stood out among the assembled senior royals.
While many praised her elegant look, speculation quickly emerged that the color was a subtle nod to Canada — one of the Commonwealth nations currently embroiled in a diplomatic standoff with US President Donald Trump.
Was Red a Statement of Support for Canada?
On social media, fans were quick to interpret the Princess’s fashion choice as a symbolic show of solidarity with Canada, whose national flag prominently features red.
One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I can’t help thinking that Catherine, Princess of Wales, chose red for Canada.” Another chimed in: “Thank you to the Princess of Wales for wearing #Canada’s colour today!!”

A third speculated: “I’d love to believe she’s wearing red as a nod to Canada....” while another user pointedly asked: “I notice Princess Catherine is wearing all red. Is that a sign of support for Canada?”
The timing of her outfit choice is particularly interesting given recent tensions between Canada and the United States, sparked by Donald Trump’s controversial proposal for Canada to become America’s “51st state”.
Trump’s Trade War with Canada Escalates
The speculation surrounding Catherine’s outfit comes amid a major trade dispute between Trump and Canada.
Trump recently announced he would be doubling tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, raising them from 25% to 50%. The move was a response to Ontario’s decision to impose a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S., a move Trump called an “abusive threat.”
In retaliation, Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned: “If the U.S. escalates, I will not hesitate to shut off electricity completely.”
Trump has since declared a National Emergency on Electricity, citing Canada’s tariffs as a “threat to the United States” and vowing further economic retaliation.

Trump’s Shocking “51st State” Proposal
Perhaps the most startling development in this growing dispute is Trump’s renewed push for Canada to join the United States.
“The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear.”
Trump insisted that integrating Canada into the U.S. would solve multiple issues, claiming:
- Canadians would pay significantly lower taxes.
- The U.S. military would provide better security than Canada currently has.
- There would be no more Northern Border problem between the two nations.
- The combined nation would become “bigger, better, and stronger than ever.”
He even attempted to reassure Canadians that their identity wouldn’t be erased, writing: “Your brilliant anthem, ‘O Canada,’ will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!”

While Princess Catherine has not made any public statements on the matter, her choice of Canada’s signature red on a major royal occasion has only fueled speculation.
Was it a carefully planned subtle show of support for Canada in the wake of Trump’s aggressive rhetoric? Or was it simply a stylish coincidence?
Either way, the world has certainly taken notice.
