She was best known for playing hotel manager Sybil Fawlty, the bossy wife of Basil Fawlty, portrayed by John Cleese.

Despite her battle with vascular dementia, which led to her retirement from acting in 2013, Scales was able to spend her final days at home.

"Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home," her sons noted in their statement.

In a heartwarming detail, it was revealed that just the day before her passing, Scales was watching Fawlty Towers, a show that cemented her place in TV history. Her family also thanked those who cared for her in her final moments, adding, "Her last days were comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love."

Elsewhere in her career, she received a Bafta nomination for her work as Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett's 1991 televised play, A Question of Attribution.

Scales is survived by her two sons, Samuel and Joseph, as well as a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Her family has asked for privacy during this time of grief, but they shared their gratitude for the outpouring of support and care their mother received in her later years.

Her husband, actor Timothy West, passed away just last November, marking another heartbreaking loss for the family.
