In 1998, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama, and he continues to be a respected and influential figure in the acting community.

Gambon made his theatrical debut in 1962 when he took to the stage in Dublin in a production of Othello before moving on to the National Theatre in London where he continued developing his craft under Laurence Olivier.

Olivier suggested that Gambon broaden his range, so he joined the Birmingham Repertory Company and took on classical roles such as Macbeth and Coriolanus, per the BBC.

Tributes have flooded in from fans and colleagues of the actor, including from TV personality Jeremy Clarkson, who penned: "I’m so sad to hear that Michael Gambon has died. He was hugely amusing, and such a tremendous guest, we even named a corner after him."

Clarkson is referring to Gambon's appearance on Top Gear, where celebs battle to get the fastest time racing around their circuit. On the final corner, the Harry Potter star almost flipped the car, resulting in that part of the track simply being renamed "Gambon".

Our thoughts go out to Gambons' family, friends, and fans at this time.
