The heartbreaking reason why Britney Spears shaved her head during her 2007 public meltdown has finally been revealed.

In the late naughties, the 'Toxic' singer's life fell apart over a period of 14 months, with each heartbreaking turn in her story extensively documented by the media.

One of the most shocking images to be taken at this time was a series of photographs of Britney shaving her own head.

The 2019 documentary 'Britney Spears - Breaking Point' revealed that the incident took place after she turned up unannounced at her ex-husband Kevin Federline's house because she wanted to see their sons Sean and Jayden.

Per the Mirror, when she was denied access to see her sons, Britney drove to the nearest hair salon and asked hairdresser Esther Tognozz to shave her head in front of 70 plus paparazzi.

While Tognozz attempted to advise the singer that shaving her head was a bad idea, the moment his back was turned, she took his clippers and did it herself.

Despite the singer's vulnerability, her bodyguards did nothing to intervene.

"She had two bodyguards supposedly keeping an eye out to make sure the paparazzi were not getting any pictures," Tognozz recalled in the Channel 5 documentary, as footage showed aides laughing with photographers.

But perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the incident was the moment that Britney's face changed from an expression of laughter to grief once she realized what she had done.

She worried that her "mom was going to be p***ed" before making her way to Body and Soul Tattoo studio.

Tattooist Emily Wynne-Hughes recalled hearing "an insane roaring sound outside" as Britney and the paparazzi arrived at the shop.

"I wasn't sure what was happening; if there was a riot outside and then the flashes came. The door opened slowly and a hooded figure walked in the door," she said.

Britney then confided in the tattoo artist about exactly why she had chosen to shave her head; something she revealed in the documentary for the first time in 12 years.

"I noticed her hair was gone. I remember asking her, 'why do you shave your head?' And her answer was a bit weird," the tattooist says.

"It was, you know, 'I just don't want anybody, anybody touching my head. I don't want anyone touching my hair. I'm sick of people touching my hair.'"
