Hugh Hefner's former "number one" girlfriend Holly Madison has accused him of "abusive" behavior.

Madison, 41, opened up about filming the hit reality TV show The Girls Next Door in a new YouTube video, where she explained that the late magazine mogul was "verbally abusive" toward her.

She went on to say that Hefner deliberately created tension between her and the other women and that much of what was seen in the reality TV show was scripted by the producers.

"I wouldn't say I enjoyed doing the show until Season 3," the model admitted, revealing that during the early seasons she hid in Hefner's room so that she would not be disturbed by the camera crews.

"Even before the show was there," she continued, "he would very much create double standards and different rules for the girls and it was designed so he could have a big ego and he could feel fought over... it was really gross, in my opinion."

Madison, who went on to star in the Las Vegas production Peepshow, explained that while she was "a little sad" when The Girls Next Door ended in 2010, she was glad to have left Hefner in 2008 after his other girlfriends Kendra Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt left too.

"At that point in my relationship with Hef, things had gotten so bad, he became over the top verbally abusive overnight and I just was panicking," she remembered.

"Where you are the only one and you're dealing with that other one person one on one, you start to see their true character. I panicked, I was like I don't care what I'm giving up, I have to get out of here. I was a little sad the fun times were leaving, but not to the point I stopped to rethink my decision."

After the release of Madison's memoir, Down The Rabbit Hole, in 2015, Hefner responded to her allegations in an interview with Us Weekly, as per Cosmopolitan.

"Over the course of my life I've had more than my fair share of romantic relationships with wonderful women," he said. "Many moved on to live happy, healthy, and productive lives, and I'm pleased to say remain dear friends today. Sadly, there are a few who have chosen to rewrite history in an attempt to stay in the spotlight. I guess, as the old saying goes: You can't win 'em all!"

In her recent YouTube video, the 41-year-old also alleged that she and her co-stars were also tricked into appearing nude on the show by Hefner and the producers, something that she said was not previously disclosed to them.
