Sunday night saw the 2019 Emmys roll around. The awards ceremony recognises excellence in television, and it's a great opportunity for everyone to heap praise on people who - let's face it - don't get enough plaudits and glory already: actors.
I'm being glib, of course. The ceremony is much more than a mutual back-slapping photo op for the rich and famous. It's a chance for us all to remember the great television shows of the past year - and let's face it, there have been a lot.
There was the triumphant return of Killing Eve - starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, the latter of whom won best leading drama actress for her role as Villanelle in the series. Another triumph for the Brits saw Phoebe Waller-Bridge scoop the prizes for best leading comedy actress, best comedy series and best comedy writing for her highly successful show Fleabag.
"It's so wonderful and reassuring to know that a dirty, pervy, angry and messed-up woman can make it to the Emmys," quipped the writer and actress, in reference to the lead character of the series.
Check out the tense trailer for the Emmy-winning Ozark here:Elsewhere, Jason Bateman took home the Emmy for outstanding direction of a drama series (for Ozark), beating out Game of Thrones in the process. Frankly, no-one looked more surprised than Bateman himself at the pronouncement of his triumph, and now his reaction has become the internet's new favourite meme.
I think we can all only aspire to that level of iconic reaction in our own lives. Jason Bateman, we salute you as the new king of the Emmy meme. Applications now closed until next year.
