Girls actress and artist, Jemima Kirke, is being praised on social media for being open about the realities of motherhood.

In honour of International Mother's Day, Kirke took to Instagram to publicly thank her children's nanny for her hard work, and she also made a frank confession, which many parents will be able to relate to: namely, that she "can't stand" playtime.

“And happy Mother’s Day to @sweetsbystacy82 I can’t stand playing with children so you’ve saved them and me a whole lot of boredom,” Kirke captioned the snaps, which saw her nanny, Stacy, play with her nine-year-old daughter, Rafella Israel Mosberg, and seven-year-old son, Memphis Kirke Mosberg.

"Thank you for making me a better mother and for being nothing short of another mom to my children," she added.

Kirke, who starred in all six seasons of Girls, shares Rafella and Memphis with her ex-husband, lawyer, Michael Mosberg.

She is now dating Australian musician Alex Cameron. The pair have collaborated on several artistic ventures together.

The actress's fans were quick to praise the candid post, with one Instagram user writing: "I love kids and can play for maybe half an hour before I’m over it. This is one of the main reasons I’ve considered not having children. Knowing you’re navigating through it allows me to not completely rule out motherhood."

"Thank you for being so honest- even with the risk of so much vitriol thrown at you. I am not a naturally joyful or fun loving person and never loved playing. But my daughter and I loved reading together and creating art. In the end, I think my daughter (now 25) appreciates my honestly and stability. Happy Mother’s Day to you!" another added.

Twitter was similarly full of praise, with one social media user writing, "Happy Mother’s Day to Jemima Kirke, literally the FIRST celebrity/ high profile career person parent I have ever seen to publicly acknowledge their nanny and thank them. I have a new level of respect for this person. (And I hope that nanny is getting P A I D) [sic]."
