The actor, 63, is regarded as one of the biggest stars of recent generations and is widely loved by fans - but not by all of his colleagues, it seems.
One of his earlier roles was playing The Riddler in Batman Forever, which was released in 1995, alongside Val Kilmer as the Caped Crusader.
While the role quickly became iconic, it also turned out that one of his co-stars didn't love the experience of working with him quite so much.
Carrey opened up about the backstage drama during an appearance on the Norm Macdonald podcast.
He revealed that Tommy Lee Jones, who played Harvey Dent/Two-Face, definitely didn't vibe with Carrey's energy on set.
Carrey explained: "He couldn't sanction my buffoonery. That's when we did Batman Forever together."
He revealed how he'd planned to channel the tension with Jones into his acting, explaining: "When I heard that I was going to be acting with Tommy Lee I, of course, thought this is gonna be wild.
"Like, if he's a pain in the butt, I'll use it and if he's, you know, a happy guy, I'll have a good time."
The tension between the two reached a head when Carrey bumped into Jones at a restaurant after filming began, where it became glaringly obvious that the movie legend was not a fan of Carrey.
Recalling the awkward moment, Carrey revealed: "The maître d' said 'I hear you're working with Tommy Lee Jones, he's over in the corner having dinner.' And I went over and I said 'Hey Tommy, how are you doing?' and the blood just drained from his face. It was before the biggest scene we have together in the movie."

Carrey claims that Jones began to shake as he stood up to acknowledge him, before telling the Ace Ventura: Pet Detective actor: "I hate you."
The star joked that Jones must have "been in mid-kill me fantasy" when he'd decided to approach his table, admitting it was a "big mistake".
He says he asked Jones: "Gee, man, what's the problem?", to which the now-78-year-old responded: "I cannot sanction your buffoonery."

Fans shared their thoughts in the comments, writing: "Look, they both made a really fun movie together and they should be proud of that. They were both a part of my childhood in that particular movie and forever will be grateful to them for that."
Others added: "'Sanctioning Buffoonery' needs to be the name of the documentary made about Batman Forever," and: "He should've just asked him if he wanted to hear most annoying sound in world."
