Each year the host of the Oscars has the task of gripping the audience from the first moment... but Jimmy Kimmel apparently failed to get people excited.

It can't be easy to stand in front of the biggest stars on the planet and attempt to keep them entertained - given that most of them are entertainers themselves.

We all thought that Jo Koy's opening monologue at the Golden Globes, and in fairness, I don't think it can get any worse than that... but some believe that Kimmel came close.

As is customary, he poked fun at those in the room to try and take the edge off the evening, but some of his jokes fell completely flat.

He began strong by acknowledging Greta Gerwig and her snub in the Best Director category, but for whatever reason he then decided to start telling Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling that they were attractive.

Continuing this theme, he turned his attention to the director Christopher Nolan, saying: "Oppenheimer, directed by the great Christopher Nolan.

"Also a very attractive man. And this is a very - this is a fascinating person. Christopher Nolan doesn't have a smartphone, he doesn't use email. And he writes his scripts on a computer with no internet connection, which is a powerful way of saying, I will not allow my porn addiction to get in the way of my work."

The last sentence certainly seems a bit unnecessary.

Check out some of Kimmel's speech:

It's no secret that a lot of movies were lengthy this year, and Kimmel nodded at this, stating: "The average length of the top ten movies was 2 hours and 23 minutes. That's up 30 minutes from three years ago. When I went to see Killers of the Flower Moon I had my mail sent to the theater."

However, while many jokes fell flat, one particularly rubbed people up the wrong way, as he appeared to poke fun at the drug addiction that Robert Downey Jr faced earlier in his life.

"[For]Robert Downey Jr. this is one of the highest points of his career. But Robert has been," as RDJ pointed at his face, leading Kimmel to add: "Was that too on the nose or a drug motion you made?"

"But look at him, he's so handsome, so talented, he's won every award there is to win. Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?"

RDJ didn't look overly impressed with the jokes, and people were quick to take to social media to offer their thoughts.

One person said: "Jimmy Kimmel comedy is like waiting in line at a government agency," while a second said: "Jimmy Kimmel competing for worst host of 2024 along with Jo Koy."

A third person said: "Who the f*ck keeps hiring Jimmy Kimmel. He’s the most boring and tiring host."

Tough crowd!
