Julianne Moore has spoken out about why she wants the "sexist" term "aging gracefully" to be banned once and for all.
The 60-year-old Hollywood star recently shared her thoughts on the phrase - which is typically used to describe somebody (usually an older individual) who doesn't try hard to look younger than their actual age - in the latest issue of As If Magazine.
The Hunger Games star states that she believes the term to be "totally sexist", in that it is more commonly used when referring to women, rather than men.
"There's so much judgment inherent in the term 'aging gracefully,'" the Academy Award-winner said, per People. "Is there an ungraceful way to age? We don't have an option of course. No one has an option about aging, so it's not a positive or a negative thing, it just is."
Moore then stressed:
"[Aging is] part of the human condition, so why are we always talking about it as if it is something that we have control over?"
Quoting fellow Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, Moore added: "Aging is a requirement of life: You either grow old or die young."
Moore then spoke about how aging should be about inner growth, and lead to people asking questions such as "How do we continue to evolve? How do we navigate life to have even deeper experiences?"
This isn't the first time the actor has spoken out about aging tropes in the media.
Back in 2019, Moore revealed in an interview with Harper's Bazaar that we need to "get rid" of the "horrible" phrase, "Women of a certain age".
"We all know, especially now when everything is documented, how old everybody is and it doesn't really matter. This idea where you can no longer mention age is archaic, so I'd like to get rid of that," she told the publication.
