In the year of 2018, I feel like almost nothing surprises me anymore. It seems like anything can happen and plenty of people out there are kind of losing their minds, but amidst all the chaos there is some comedy to find in all of it. For instance, can you imagine thinking that Kim Kardashian would meet with the President of the United States before? Now, it's just an average day.
There was already something weird going on in the White House earlier this week, when people realised it had been 19 days since First Lady Melania Trump had been seen in public. Most recently, she was seen on 10 May at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where she accompanied her husband to greet returning US citizens from North Korea. Four days later, it was announced that she had successfully undergone a procedure to treat a benign kidney condition, with no complications. Later, she set things straight:
Now, in what would have passed for satire a few years back, reality star Kim Kardashian visited the oval office to speak with Trump. The pair were photographed alongside one another in one of Trump's tweets on Wednesday this week. "Great meeting with @KimKardashian today," he wrote, "talked about prison reform and sentencing".
Kardashian was in attendance to talk about a possible pardon for Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman serving a life sentence in prison for a non-violent, first-time drug offence. Kim has been working behind the scenes to help secure her release after becoming aware of Johnson's plight in October.
Despite the fact that there were genuine political reasons for her to talk with the president, people took offence to the idea of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star turning up to potentially make changes to the policies of the Trump administration.
This being the internet, there were other reactions too. The image has enough significance in itself to become a meme - and Twitter was quick to make jokes and help the whole thing go down a little easier.
Following their meeting, Kardashian has now spoken out about how she felt the talks went. "I think that he really spent the time to listen to our case that we were making for Alice," she said in an interview with Mic. "He really understood, and I am very hopeful that this will turn out really positively."
“I went in, me and Shawn, to really talk to the president about Alice Johnson and really explain to him why she would be such a good person to grant clemency to.
"The president seems to have a passion for what everything that Jared has been trying to do, and that just makes me happy that that conversation is just moving forward."
While this is undoubtedly a bizarre meeting to have taken place - hopefully the efforts to free Alice Johnson will be successful in the near future.
