Kim Kardashian has shared her support for a truck driver who was sentenced to 110 years for accidentally killing four people when his brakes failed on a Colorado interstate.
Earlier this month, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, was handed a lengthy sentence after he was convicted in October on vehicular homicide and 23 other charges, ABC 7 reports.
The incident took place in April 2019 and resulted in tragedy when Aguilera-Mederos' brakes failed while he was driving a semi-tractor-trailer at 85 mph, he told police at the time.
As per an arrest affidavit, the 26-year-old had attempted to pull over to the shoulder in order to avoid coming into contact with other vehicles, however, another large truck had already stopped there.
Millions of people have signed a petition to grant Aguilera-Mederos clemency and Kim Kardashian, who recently passed the "baby bar" exam, is very much in agreement.
On Tuesday, the famous reality star shared with her 271 million Instagram followers that she had learned about the case and "took a deep dive in it to figure out what the situation is."
“I know everyone has been posting about Rogel Aguilera-Mederos this week,” she wrote on her Instagram story. “I took a deep dive in it to figure out what the situation is.”
She continued: “(A) shocking and unfair part of this case is that the judge didn’t want to sentence him to such a lengthy sentence.
“However because of the mandatory minimums in Colorado his hands were tied. Mandatory minimums take away judicial discretion and need to end. Colorado law really has to be changed and this is so unfair.”
Kim continued: “(Governor Polis) is a really good person and I know he will do the right thing.
“I pray that Governor Polis, who has been a leader on supporting reforms that increase human dignity in the legal system, will commute his sentence.”
She went on to say that the behavior of a lawyer on the prosecution team, who reportedly shared insensitive posts after Aguilera-Mederos' sentencing, made her “sick”.
Kardashian said: “Four people died in this tragic accident. Rogel has a life sentence for the accident, which will not only destroy his life, but will also impact his wife and son’s life.
“And yet, for some reason the prosecutor thought it would be funny to post a photo of a brake shoe trophy she received from a colleague with a plaque. Makes me so sick.”
